Lost my phone last week . I am a bit disappointed with blackberry protect. I could not locate or wipe the device remotely and that was a few hours after i lost the phone. As soon as who ever picked it up wiped the phone there is no other way of recovering the phone

I don't think any phone can be found or wiped if the sim is out or the thief wipes it first. In the US it can be black listed so it's useless.

    ? AT&T Z10 STL100-3/10.2.0.1791 ?

Could always try video chatting with the pin and see if they pick up LOL or do a PIN TO PIN message.

I know it hurts when you lose your phone... I have had it in the past...
Also protect works when you have an internet connection...and is not really robust.

If some dev can make an app which can make the BlackBerry 'steal-proof' then maybe he can become rich overnight!

Sorry for your loss... maybe you can pick up a new one...

These BlackBerry Protect doesn't do well on tracking when I am on traveling. It like stop and lost it and later on, it pop up on other side or way off the map. Can't find refresh button on BlackBerry Protect map. It doesn't quite reliable.

I'm so sorry that you lost your phone. What carrier are you with? Can they offer you some kind of compensation for it?

I hope you feel better soon!

Sounds like the original poster had his phone insured, so that's good. That's what insurance is for. Without "insurance", carriers should not offer "compensation" because someone loses a phone.

Unless the phone is working and on a data network (or wifi) you can't see it with Protect. Any phone requires this. The pro-active steps are:

    1) Password on device that will wipe device after ten fails.
    2) SIM password so someone can't use your SIM (and see whatever you may have on it -- like contacts)
    3) If what's on your media card is sensitive, encrypt.

    Sorry about the phone, man,

I highly recommend you encrypt the SD card and main memory on your next phone.

The caution with sd-card encryption is that if the original device fails for some reason, then the card's data canNOT be read or used anywhere else - it is tied to the failed phone. So clearly, the user must do their own regular backups or risks losing the data.

I canNOT confirm, but some have said that updating the OS can also create access problems to an encrypted card. I would expect to read about such issues if it were true.

Well BlackBerry Protect was never useful to me.
For those situations apple is way better.
One night at my job, a passenger (I work in the airport as a taxi dispatch) asked me if I could help him find his phone. He showed me his ipad which has a locator and showed me where the phone was, I noticed that the phone was in the taxi holding lot, which meant that his phone was still in the taxi he took. The passenger gave me the taxi ride receipt then I called the base to send a supervisor to where the taxi was.
At the end he got his phone back, and I was really glad I could help him. And at the same time I was angry at the fact that you can't do that with any BlackBerry device.
By saying "you can't do that" what I mean is being able to find your phone while being out of your home. With BlackBerry Protect you have to have a computer, and know all the information needed to go through the security check before login in to BlackBerry Protect

BlackBerry Protect worked fine for me when I dropped my phone and I thought I lost it. Pin pointed exact location. I'm sure signal and battery strength can play a role however.

I locked my phone with Protect on my computer until I located my phone.

Installing a leak can cause issues as the phone gets wiped I think, and perhaps the Sachesi route might run into some unforseen issue (but I can't think of what), but a standard BlackBerry upgrade shouldn't cause a problem.
    I have gone from 10.0 --> 10.1 --> 10.1 MR BETA --> 10.1 MR RTM --> 10.2 BETA --> 10.2 RTM --> 10.2.1 BETA 1 --> 10.2.1 BETA 2, all with no issues with maintaining access to my encrypted SD card.
