It's a DUMMY model...one to show off. No end user will ever see that.
To compare that to an actual production device is silly.
It IS cheap and plastic. Dummy models go for $25-$50 to stores that do not have live phones on display. The real phone is NOT the same as that.
Working at Rogers wireless for a number of years before I changed industries, All of the dummy phones that came into the store looked like crap next to the real thing. You should have seen how crappy the iphone dummy model looked. To me personally, the phone still looks like crap lol but the Iphone real phone looked 100x better than the dummy phone.
I thought the dummy store models were always the exact same thing as the ones that are being sold except the insides are not intact, but everything else is exactly as the model that is being sold. Thats why i was a bit surprised to see the dummy model compared to the leaked photos of the handset. I didn't know RIM would go out of their way to manufacture a cheaper version of poorer quality just for display only.
No, they are almost always cheap and plastic, and cost next to nothing to manufacture.
Probably NOT manufactured by RIM...
Yeah all of the dummy models are just cheap plastic exteriors with a carrier branded screen and a "weight" inside to mimic the battery-included weight of the device (which was rarely accurate also).
LIke QuIcKsIlV3r said... the dummy's are complete crap. The 9900 is a gorgeous phone...however the dummy for it looked like complete garbage. It's the norm.
Actually, you'd be lucky if the dummy phone came with a weight. I've played with plenty of dummy phones before and they are always significantly lighter than the actual product. It is after an empty shell to show you how it geometrically will look like.
I lol'd at the op. Funny question.

Dummy models I've looked at at carrier stores always feels very different from the actual product. For example, like for phones with physical buttons, for some of them the buttons don't work. It doesn't make sense to use actual parts for the exterior if its just for show. For example, why put a gorilla glass when you can use cheap plastic?
Thats because the photo's are from a sketchy site. It is probably a knock off of a cheap dummy phone. I used to go to Hong Kong in the mid to late 90's and the big thing was for people to carry fake cell phones as a status symbol. They would "ring" at random and everyone thought you were special. It was pretty funny. This "dummy" remainds me of those that you could buy for about 5.00 US. I bought one just to check it out and have some fun with my friends back in the USA. Have to look for it.
