Before anything, you may want to answer a few questions.

    1. How long have you owned and used the device?
    2. What OS are you currently on?
    3. How many active frames do you keep open?
    4. Does the phone heat up often?
    5. How often do you reboot the device?

Close apps you aren't using, delete the ones you really aren't using, and make sure all your pictures, music, and videos are saved on your SD card and not your device storage.

How does it work? What can you put on the SD card? And what type of SD card does it take

It takes a micro SD card up to 64gb. You go into your settings and select that all photos be saved to your sd card. Simple. It will free up a lot of space on your phone and allow it to run more smoothly and be a lot quicker. I am running a 32gb card and have had my Z10 since June of 2013. I have only seen it improve. No lags, no getting slower. Buy a good quality SD card (I am using a SanDisk). Speed rating needs to be 6 or above.

You can put any type of media on an sdcard - photos, music, videos, any documents you have. All kinds of files. You canNOT install apps on the card. So, if you have those types of things on the phone they could be moved to the card. It can be more secure if for some reason, the phone OS becomes a problem (very rare).

But if you have 12 gigs free, that should not be a problem.

You almost forgot to mention that some 64GB don't initially work, or slow down the device. So before using any 64GB SD cards, format it to the device first to be safe.
