I just went to change my picture password, and it required me to enter my 'device password'. Trouble is, I've entered 9 of my 10 attempts unsuccessfully! The chance of getting it in the next 'go' is nil... so what do I do?

Will the phone revert back to 0/10 after a period so I can have a few more goes? Just to be clear, it's not the PP that I'm struggling with, but the device password...

    Heeeeeelp!!!

it does not reset to zero

You will enter it wrong the 10th time and it will wipe the device and you'll need to reload your content.

Hopefully you have done a recent back up

i think it depends on what you have set in the settings, for the phone data to be erased after 10 unsuccessful attempts or you get locked out for a bit. I used to use picture password... but it was too touchy and too much of a waste of time. One time i got up to 6/10 unsuccessful attempts and it warned me that if i reached 10 it would erase all phone data. I went back to my 4-digit password.

It's not the PP that I'm failing on, though... but the actual device password

Without knowing your password Link won't let you do a backup. It will prompt you right away that the phone is password protected when you engage link.

Can anyone tell me (as it may help) whether the device password is a set number if digits? In other words, I'll have set it up with four numerics. Or is it any number?

Out of curiosity. You don't remember your own password? Or the phone just won't accept your correct password? Or you bought a used phone?

Edit : he use it but he wants to change it and after you reach the 5 or 6 time you have to enter the password not the picture password

Not funny chosen1. It's mine, since new (first day of UK release). I really think BlackBerry should have some form of reminder system in place, like they do with your BlackBerry ID.

Hi Publisher1963. have you ever used BlackBerry protect? If so, go to protect.blackberry.com and you can unlock/reset the password from there.

    Good luck!

A reminder password allows people to guess more easily.

The best security in the world doesn't help if you give people your password. Or if you make your password easy to guess.

Go to BlackBerry website and reset your password. It's too risky when 9/10 attempts have failed.

Can't do that... because you need to know your original device password. (It's not the BlackberryID password I've forgotten... but the 'device' password.)

Restarting the device will probably reset the count so you could try 9 times again.

The "number" of characters is not necessarily limited. And if you did not use simple password, it could be letters and numbers. Sorry, but I think you may be screwed unfortunately.

Good luck (with recovery if necessary)

Under OLDER OS's, someone found a way of increasing the count beyond the 10. You could set the number of attempts allowed. They made a backup of their device with the number as 10. Changed nothing but the number of counts, then did a byte compare and found the location of the COUNT. They edited it with a bit editor. I tried it and it worked. I'm not sure that is possible on bb10 OS's. Nor does it help in this case.

Have you tried hooking your phone up to link? It asks you for your device password when you connect. It may give you a few extra chances at guessing

no way out no hole or back door BlackBerry is secure for a reason, unless you are on a BES and an IT admin like me reset your device password you are pooched. When you set up your pp it should have asked you for the device password and that is what it is looking for.

Yeah and a restart won't help either; it won't clear the counter.
