With all the hubub about the Z10 gobbling up data at a lightning-quick pace on some users devices at least...and the common troubleshooting question being what apps have they loaded either directly or Android apps they have sideloaded, there seems to be a real need for a list of those apps that have been found to be the biggest offenders at the data-eating thing.

Can those who have had this problem, and have done their own investigation about this give us a list of those apps that are known data-gluttons?

I've found that disabling the built in diagnostic app not only improves battery but reduces unnecessary data consumption.

Do u know why some apps are free? Cause they used ur data to transmit ads.

And other cause for data to rises up is when u use desktop mode to surf with flash enabled. Those stupid flash ads are a real data hoggers.

What apps are allowed to run in the background and use data? I thought if the active window is closed the app closes?

By disabling this, what kind of % increase in battery life did you see?

    Thanks

my z10 is sending/receiving data ~every hour... from like 0.25-1mb (i only have 200mb/month). i only have 2 email accounts and i've turned syncing to manual for both, as well as disabled syncing for fb and twitter. only apps i've installed are the cb app and gtalk (which i haven't been running). also diagnostics has been off since i got the phone. my battery is fine though.

Was regularly getting about 11 hours prior to changing that setting now I can get about an extra hour, sometimes two, of usage on the same charge. Keep in mind I use my phone moderate to heavily most days. I also changed my network status to hspa+/ gsm only because tmobiles lte network isn't available in my area and it's my experience that any additional signal searching drains on the battery.

Just curious. Have you used the "Maps" app at all? I got my Z10 on Feb. 5 (Canada). On Feb. 8 I logged on to Bell to check my usage and was shocked to see I'd already chewed through 193mb. Sure I'd made some calls and played with the phone more than I normally would, but my plan only allows for 500mb monthly so I try to be careful.

When I browsed through my usage details I found the culprit. Part of my playing had included a test of the maps app. I had navigated to and from work, 20 mins round trip, using all features such points of interest and turn by turn voice. The connection was 4G. That little adventure cost me 92mb.

Lesson learned. From now on I'll only use my in-car TomTom or the "Mireo Don't Panic" app which does not require a connection at all to function.

BTW: The maps app worked fine

WhatsApp. It zaps data on all smartphones, not just Z10. But I still need it.

I just turned the diagnostics off tonight. Lets see what that will do.
Also, from another forum thread I will turn off the "turn off screen gestures when off"

    Lets see what happens.

While the built-in diagnostic application does consume a bit of data, the information sent to BlackBerry aids in improving BlackBerry OS 10. During the initial months you are increasing the body of real use performance data. The amount of data sent by the diagnostics application is minimal.
