I've read different posts on this, but I am hoping for some clarity or a fix.

On some wifi networks, my gmail stops sending and receiving emails. I get an imap connection problem. But on this same network I have no problems sending and receiving emails on my playbook via gmail.

This is very annoying. I am out of country and trying to use the wifi. The only way to get it to work is to turn off wifi because it takes precedence over network data.

Yep I've been discussing this myself. Just wondering, do you not get Gmail at all? Mine comes in in about 15 minute "poll" intervals when this is the case. But again this has to do with my router's settings.

The only way I know how to fix this is to get a new router. Which I will be doing eventually myself

It works perfectly fine on my home wifi and cell data network.

Just encountered a few wifi at hotels and work places that cause the problem. Gmail won't work at all. But playbook works fine?? Weird.
