I guess one of the consequences if poor device sales and all the negative press... I found out about FlightAware only recently from a CB feature, and it is the BEST flight tracking tool I've ever used. Found a minor bug and reported it to the dev, who responded in part: "I am very sorry for this inconvenience. We are no longer supporting The Blackberry app version so there may be a few issues since the app has not been updated recently..."

    Very disappointed!

I use FlightStats online as my go-to airlines tool. just sad we have to rely on a web shortcut instead of a native app.

FlightAware is a very neat application. But from my 9800/9810 days I found it too heavy for mobile use. Unless you really want to keep track of all commercial flights in the area I would suggest you use BlackBerry Travel: BlackBerry Travel for BlackBerry 10 - BlackBerry World

I use this app to manage an notify me not only for my personal travel, but also when I'm picking up or dropping off family and friends at the airport.

BlackBerry travel is all you need. It's native and it works.

As noted in another thread, BlackBerry travel crashes a lot lately. I've used it for years on the bold etc but on bb10 it is somewhat unstable

I also thought FlightAware was gone but fear not. Just go to www.flightaware.com and choose "Save to Home screen". It will save it as a white box with a blue plane inside labeled as "FlightAware", looking just like an app icon. The page will also come up looking like an app would, not as a desktop Web page. I use it all the time when I hear flights overhead. This is much better than the version in BB World that has the light blue icon with the white plane in it. With that version it has no "Nearby Me" option to locate flights overhead with one click as does the version I mentioned above . Hope this helps!

Actually the version from app world DOES have the near-me option, but that is one big the functions it often freezes on...
I'll try the web version I guess...

BlackBerry Travel is NOTHING like FlightAware. Anyone that says so has NO idea what FlightAware is.

Sorry to hear this news. Like FlightAware.

Depends on your use case. I get everything I need from BlackBerry Travel. Flight Aware does a lot more, and if that's what you want or need then it's the application you should use. I used FA quite a bit until BlackBerry Travel came out, so I'm familiar with it. Just don't have a need for it.

Zero crashes and completely stable. Travel 100K + miles and nights per year and this app is a must have.

Try to stay focused folks. This thread isn't about BlackBerry Travel or using a web based alternative.
Flightaware is a great app, and available on every platform. It does exactly what I, a very frequent traveler, needs in a travel application.
It is very unfortunate that they have decided not to continue development.

So much for a robust ecosystem

FlightAware from my experience works best in a desktop browser and second in a mobile browser. The standalone apps always have issues.

You are correct on both counts. But in the normal churn of applications being added to, dropped from or going stale in the ecosystem it is important to ask why. Why has FlightAware decided to no longer provide support for their application? I don't really expect them to answer, since that may be tipping their business hand.

I, personally, did not even consider installing FlightAware on my BB10 devices because of my experience with the application on my BBOS devices. It is a great application and provides a lot that isn't available elsewhere, but there was on BBOS (and I suspect is on BB10) a price to be paid for that. For me the features I lost going to BB Travel were not important, but the reduced burden on the device battery and data consumption were. If the majority of potential users felt or believed the same as I, then it is logical to assume update of FlightAware on BB10 has not met whatever threshold they want to justify expending resources supporting the platform.

This is the whole BlackBerry survival story in miniature. Is FlightAware better than BB Travel, or any other alternatives? For the sake of argument let's say it is. In the end does that matter if not enough people use it?
