You take photos in a 16:9 aspect ratio and you want us to belive that you know what you are talking about?

I bit harsh, I know, but you should know by now that to get the best results you have to use the sensor's native aspect ratio which is 4:3.
Really? Then why did it come set on 16:9 by default? That's the resolution that most people will most likely be shooting in I'm guessing. Besides, 16:9 is pretty much the standard as far as images and videos are set as for presentation.

I don't know why that is the default setting, I'm also wondering what idi0t at BlackBerry made that decision.

16:9 is not the standard ratio for images, 4:3 is. Anyone talking about image quality should know this.

As a quick test, try changing the ratio without moving the phone (put it on a table or something). You will notice that with 16:9 a digital zoom is applied to the image, which results in quality loss.

It depends on the camera. For point and shoots it's 4:3 and for DSLRs it's 3:2. For smartphones it's generally 16:9

Not true. Smartphones and point and shoot cameras both use 4:3. It's the native sensor aspect ratio. Just try changing the ratio while keeping the phone still and you will see. The 16:9 ratio is obtained by digitally zooming in into a 4:3 image feed. This affects quality quite a lot.

The square format makes the most of any lens, since the lens is a circle. I prefer the square format on all photos but I hardly use the phone cameras anymore since I bought an SLR and a medium format camera for under 50

There's no such thing as a square image sensor. The 1:1 format is not native, it's just a cropped 4:3 image.

I know but there's a school of thought that a square format makes the most of the lens ( not sensor)

My medium format camera does have a square "sensor"

Z10 camera is fine. My iPhone 5 pic sizes are 1.9mb, not 300k. OP you are not comparing the right photos if you say they are 300k, and inferior. I find the iPhone 5 camera slightly better than the Z10, but not greatly so.
