I thought that the screen technology was different on the q10 and z10 and therefore the dark theme saves battery on the q but not the z. No idea , but would love to know so I know whether to use it or not as I much prefer the light theme. But when ir comes to saving battery life.. what's gotta be done has got to be done!

Black theme is cosmetic only for z10 and doesn't save battery at all. It's nice to have the option. Glad BlackBerry are listening!

Dark theme doesn't save battery on a Z10. The super-LCD combines all colors to create black. The AMOLED on the Q's and Z30 turn off pixels to create black.

Takes more juice for the screen to create black then white. As he said above. Amoled turns off pixels to create black, Z10 (lcd?) used all the colors and pixels to create black. Therefore using more juice

Well at least the option is there for us. I like the dark theme, but I also like changing it up and using light theme sometimes.

That's not exactly how an LCD screen works. Technically, all three colors are lit all the time by the backlight. It's the varying closure amount of the LCD in front of the sub-pixel color that creates the darkness of the pixel. More juice is needed to completely close off the pixel to appear black than is needed to leave it wide open.

It's miniscule, but it does pull just a tiny bit more power to go full black trying to keep all those sub-pixel liquid crystal rods oriented the right way blocking the backlight.

But, really, how often is the screen completely black? Before long, the backlight will turn off, and that's a much bigger current draw than a black display could ever pull.

The only time the screen stays lit and (mostly) blacked out is while plugged in and in bedside mode.

Even though it doesn't help the Z10, I'm glad they offered the option. Now they just need to offer it system-wide like the Q10 has.

    wrong

it's been proven by the developer of battery guru that the dark theme does help with battery life just not to the extent as it does with an AMOLED screen.. it is NOT worse

quote from the developer of batteryguru (thread)

Here's some initial data. Both had the brightness set to 100% for the test.

    First the Z10:
    • All-black screen: 0.76W
    • All-white screen: 0.97W

Dev Alpha C (assuming for now it's same as Q10, with an OLED screen, but I don't know that for sure).
    • All-black screen: 0.34W
    • All-white screen: 0.82W

That shows that both use less power with black, though the Q10 uses, relatively and in absolute terms, much less.
there you go proof to all the dark theme nay sayers

To create black pixel should be off. There it does save energy. If all 3 pixel on then it will create white. Don't u learn about color combination in light? White contains all color.

digged up more info on black vs white on LCD.

Black vs white screen power consumption - 24 more monitors tested « Techlogg.com Techlogg.com

In conclusion, If you really want to save battery on z10, it's all about lowering your backlight. Black and White doesn't really make a difference on any LCD screen.

    Ladies, Gents.

The Z10 uses LCD, so there's no inherent power savings from using a dark theme.

The could be, however, a slight power saving due to the automatic contrast mode of many modern LCD screens - that is, that when a "dark" screen is being displayed, the backlight automatically dims to adjust the perceivable contrast (and prevent the stark white text from being so bright compared to the black background).

So there may be very slight savings from a dark theme due to the reduced backlight as the screen compensates for contrast - however the biggest savings come when a dark theme is used on an OLED which, by nature, is using less power with the dark theme.

Z10 - Slight power savings possible.
Z30 - Significant power savings possible.

P.S. Anyone noticed how awesome the bedside mode clock looks on the Z30? The OLED screen means it just looks awesome without backlight bleed <3

Just passing info I've read, if it saves battery that's great. I've turned on all the possible dark themes for my z10. The z30 Amoled isn't it?

You have to physical go into the settings menu on your...
    1) Contacts
    2) BBM
    3) Calendar
    4) SMS/Text Message. (this tends to have some issues where it doesn't change it for few people)

From what's been described, the natural state of an LCD is white, from the backlighting. When an LCD pixel is lit, it switches to opaque, which blocks the light from the backlight and that's why things are reversed from the conventional thinking of combining RGB to make white.
