    Title says it all.
Last time I tried upgrading to 10.2.1.1259
I did a custom backup, I only selected pictures, documents, music and settings I did not want the app files because I can re-download them easily. But when I tried restoring none of my contacts were restored and instead I got blank spaces...

You should perform a full backup and custom restoration.

What a lot of users overlook is the fact that these utilities like the Browser, Contacts, Calendar etc. are actually applications.

People make the assumption that restoring settings will restore the application data, but obviously this is not the case.
Restoring settings only determines how those applications behave, not the data that those same applications contain.

It would be nice to have granular control of these things like the old DTM.

And it does not backup my contacts.. just installed the new leak 10.2.1.1925 , had a custom backup with only media and settings checked. But none of my new contacts that I added the past week were there but the weird thing that it still shows my call logs from yesterday!

Ok. Maybe it was not made clear enough...
As stated earlier by the other member, you need to perform a full back up...
If you only had Media and Settings checked, you would not have any Contact Application data within that back up.
You have to back up your Application data in order to restore Application data.

In the future, you might look into Firechest (free in bb world) - it can backup and restore contacts, calendar and other options.

Contacts management is fundamental to BlackBerry. We should not need to resort to third party apps that may compromise our privacy to manage our contacts.

I ran into the same problem with Link. I was actually on the phone with the BlackBerry tech and they could not tell me if the full backup option also backed up contacts.

They asked if I sync with Google and I said no, I don't want to. And I don't have Outlook installed at home. How do I know that my contacts are backed up?? They could't tell me.

Simple solution is for BlackBerry to release a new version of BlackBerry Protect that performs like BBOS version.

We are always free to pray for miracles!!!! I think we have more hope of BB Link being improved but even there, I don't hold my breathe.

I've done 2 or 3 FULL backups and FULL restores, and my contacts were all there. I think after 2 security wipes, and once with my replacement after my daughter decided to give my phone a shower under the fridge water dispenser.

I have scoured the forums and could not find a thread that clearly states what is backed up in each of the three categories available. Based on what I have read in different threads here is what I'm guessing:

    1. Application Data - The actual BB apps on the phone (not including Android APK's). It also backs up any data within those applications (such as any local contacts and local calendar entries)
    2. Media - I would assume this is music and pictures that somehow made it to your phone memory instead of an installed SD card. I'm still not clear what is in this bucket.
    3. Settings - I originally thought this was things like your custom ringtones, fonts, the location of the icons on the screen and in user-created folders. It might include some of these things, but it appears to also include the items in the Remember folder, text messages and who knows what else.

What an idiotic mess! I just spent the last several hours of my evening wiping my other half's Z10 and reinstalling the current 10.2.1 OS to try and fix the problem of no Instant Preview toasts from BBM messages. It gets all other Previews except BBM ones. I tried all of the tricks found in other threads to no avail, so this was my last ditch effort. I installed each of the three backup items one-by-one and the one that carries the "problem" is in "Settings", but if I don't restore them the phone loses all of the Remember items which are very important to restore.

I'm going to have to try and back these up some other way and do it all over again, without restoring "Settings", but first I need to know exactly what I will not be restoring if I do that. Can anyone guide me to a thread that has the definitive contents of each? I can't find it.

Too simple I guess. To not have a cloud backup for this long and no mention of it returning almost seems deliberate. Ugh

I dont know what LINK backs up... but i can tell you its of no use of using LINK in backing up because you can never restore back using link.. . I was so disappointed with it as i was only depending on LINK.
