Perhaps. We shall see. I think it is too early to tell, but one never knows.

If they are sitting on that much inventory, they will have to clear it one way or another. In the past BlackBerry hasn't really wanted to sell direct as they defer to their carrier partners, but at this point in the game I think it would be worth them setting up so people could buy unlocked Z10s on the cheap. I think Google sold a lot of Nexus 4's when they blew them out recently at $200.

Perhaps BB need to setup a direct channel full stop.... sell the unlocked devices directly, reduced price to consumer, boost sales, probably make same or better margins...carriers wont care they will make more on sim only contracts anyway...

Wouldn't be a bad idea. I know I would purchase at least 2 for my family, if not more
Drop the other devices a little, and I'll buy them for myself too!

It should be noted that the HP TouchPad was a Wi-Fi only device while the BlackBerry Z10 is a cellular device. I think having a fire sale on the latter would be somewhat more difficult. Having said that, if Blackberry has as many Z10 smartphones (and I would guess Q10 smartphones) in inventory as it appears they do, a fire sale may be the best course of action.

IMO, Blackberry should significantly lower their off-contract prices now (but not to fire sale levels) and if necessary have a fire sale in late winter/spring 2014.

Yeah, fire sale! Many people are reluctant to buy the Z10 as the price is too irrelevant. The fire sale will boost the volume up and I can get more friends to make the switch to bb10. #keepmoving as #ichooseblackberry10!

Hhm then I might consider the z50 by the end of next year

Well, it would help those that are reluctant because of the price. People have many other reasons.

They might have a clause in their contracts w carriers that prevent this, tho. I would buy at least one more if the price was low enough.

Are we sure that most of that inventory is actually assembled phones? How much of it just Z10 size screens and other components they had to buy?

I don't expect such a huge discount that quick. They stated that the Z10 will be their entry-level device. They might even have cancelled another low-end touch device seeing their inventory. There were news that there won't be new devices until march so they won't clear out all their stock with such a low price.
Even before last weeks news one could buy a Z10 for about 300 here in Germany (VAT incl.), though. That's about half the original price. One retailer has a limited offer: 260.

If there really was a fire sale they'll go down to $175 to $200. Doubt it would go as low as $100.

BlackBerry could use 1Saleaday, Woot, Amazon and other online storefronts to sell their unlocked Z10s, as they used that method (and still do) for the PlayBook.

A "fire sale" for BlackBerry would be $300. Can't see it happening as they're too proud of a company to do so.

That's not a fire sale. That's a normal pricing scenario.

Blackberry should be selling its devices unlocked directly to the consumers anyways, especially in the states. Carriers are not helping. Blackberry needs to cut the middle man and develop relationship with its consumers and change the perception but Heins is too busy waiting for his golden parachute rather than working hard to turn this thing around.
In fact, I think Blackberry should either sell its devices online directly or setup kiosks in busy malls. Start small but change the perception. Main reason Apple became cool was not only its products but also great buying experience in their stores. Once you get in their store, you will end up buying something.

Yep, picked up a Koodoo Nexus 4 for 300.00, and it came with a 100.00 Future Shop gift card. Pretty darn nice phone for what was essentially 200.00. Best thing is that it is unlocked out of the box and you can cancel Koodoo after 3 months. I was really hoping that BB would step up this week. For the same deal I would have chosen the z10 over the Android, but I'm not paying 600.00 for the Z 10

I wonder if the phones are already carrier-branded? That would make it tough for BB to direct-sell them.
