i think if you hold on a contact (press and hold) it gives you such an option (to link similar)

Go to your contacts swipe from the top click settings and then turn off sim contacts

yea, i did this method to get rid of duplicates on mine. It gives even more options if your contacts are linked from email accounts too etc. Heard about the other tip i posted about...but the method you used is what i used and works fine for me.
