Note that when you are doing that you are not actually zooming in. The lens does not have any moving parts and therefore you are only getting a simulated zoom (digital zoom) which actually lowers the overall quality of the photo. The software tries to fill in the gaps so that it doesn't look pixelated, but it's not perfect.

Just pointing it out so you know why the photo doesn't look as nice as usual.

^ what lordcrankypants said is absolutely correct, but it's worth noting that not a single smartphone on the market has physical zoom, they all employ digital zoom.

It doesn't work while using time shift mode.

Also, use pinch to zoom when using the video camera as well.
