I got so addicted to the gestures that I tried several times to unlock my Android via the BlackBerry 10 method.

With 10.2.1 you can directly install apk files and important apps such as Google map, youtube, netflix and many other with 99.9% success on your phone.

This new method is still not (majority) consumer friendly.

    Here....this is how consumers think:

User says: "Ooo, I want Instagram."

User goes to BBWorld and searches for Instagram.

User says: "What's all these knock off Instagrams?" - Blackgram, iGrann

    User exits BBWorld

User perception: "BlackBerry doesn't have Instagram."

Conclusion....if the app isn't in BBWorld, it's not available on BBRY. People don't have time for tricks, gimmicks, or work-arounds.

It's true. Its a part of the dumbing down of society. BlackBerry is more for technical users. Where apple is simple and doesn't let you do ****! BlackBerry is doing a better job of merging the two world's. Keep it simple for the brain washed drones (aka the apple and droid users) but still allow us to side load and have a powerful, useful machine. Not sure if this makes sense, but I know what I mean.
As for the app gap and gestures. The average person doesn't want to take the time to learn these things. They are too busy watching the kardashians and trying to keep up with whatever is popular and cool. Which right now I see the market swinging from apple towards driod (more specifically samsung). BlackBerry needs to do a better job of catering to these people, while sticking to their roots of business minded and technical people.
Ok I'm off my soapbox now.
Oh and one last thing, BlackBerry really needs to learn to market better!

I find the gestures easy however it's not something that new people can quickly adapt to which is the reason why so many bad reviews have been made so far and I suspect CNN will eventually cover this under bad sides(unless of course they used the device for a long time)

I don't like pictorial icons either. I have used a launcher on Android that allows me to change the icons to words instead of pictures and I love it. I wish that I can do this on all phones.

It's a bit different. The window closing X has been there on Windows for about 30 years, along with the simple sideways triangles, circles, and squares that came from the cassette tape deck that have now become ubiquitous in digital media players. We gave Dad a tutorial on how to use the computer so he can show Mom what to do. She's constantly needing someone to empty her email account because she doesn't know how to clear out anything. She asked me yesterday if I would sit down and show her how to "do the files thing" so she can have the pictures from their camera on their PC.

I was showing her a picture on my Z10 when the screen went dark; it took a mere 10 seconds to tell her how to unlock the screen and get back to the pictures, plus how swiping across the screen goes left and right and tilting would fill the screen for vertical and horizontal pictures. The kicker is she did not ask again how to do it.

App gap is canceled out by side load or better yet direct apk download. And everyone of us had to learn the gestures. It was brand new and had nothing to do with legacy os so those who find it hard are technically challenged imo.

    ? AT&T Z10 STL100-3/10.2.0.1791 ?
Sideloading does nothing for the app gap for the vast majority of people. Plus, many of us are on 10.1.

Sorry, I don't know if this is the view from inside BB but if it is it would explain why they have had such a catastrophic collapse. It isn't Kardashian watching drones with no technical expertise. Im in my 50s, have a PhD in molecular biology and do research in human genetics and bioinformatics. I was using Unix on mainframes 30 years ago and have been on national level planning committees for the supercomputer grid in the US. I work with relatively high level researchers and physicians. An incredibly small number of them have BBs. A few do, but even hospitals that stuck with BBs for security are now using iPhones that are managed by the IT groups. I remember laughing one year at the annual meeting of the American Society for Cancer Research back when only ATT had the iPhone, you couldn't buy an ATT signal at the meeting because everyone had a damn iphone. The same is true of business clients, there is a thread elsewhere in the forums in which someone posted about enterprise use, BB is third now. The soapbox has a pretty big hole in it.

    anecdotal |ˌanikˈdōtl| adjective
(of an account) not necessarily true or reliable, because based on personal accounts rather than facts or research: while there was much anecdotal evidence there was little hard fact | these claims were purely anecdotal.

    opinion |əˈpinyən| noun
a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge: I'm writing to voice my opinion on an issue of great importance

One of these things is not like the other.

The gestures if anything are not initially intuitive.... but hard??? no

I wish these gestures become standard across all platforms because they actually seem rational - Whereas, my windows 8 tablet gestures make me want to re-consider ultimate frisbee as an activity.

the general public doesn't know, want or care about sideloads,,, it's still just a workaround for what should be native apps,,, people want to buy a phone, turn it on, & have what they want to be there & work properly...
That's what 10.2.1.x starts to address, Android .apk files can be installed directly after downloading to your phone, no external steps needed.

What remains to be seen is how easy are BlackBerry going to make it to access those .apk files in the first place. For it to be easy for average users it needs to be in dumbed down app store format like BB World. I'd like to see them bundle 1Mobile and Amazon app stores with the stock OS to be honest.

i agree they're starting to address this, but it's the *leaks* that are addressing this,,, nothing officially released is there yet, (yes, carriers dragging their feet, maybe BB too, who knows), but wouldn't it be sooo much better to have these installed in the box???

If most of what's really good in BB10.2 and 10.2.1 was there at launch it would have made a difference to how those first reviews of BB10 devices went and what that first wave of early adopters experienced, especially easy access to Android apps.

But unfortunately since the PlayBook BlackBerry seems to have taken the attitude of just get it out of the doors and we'll add the functionality months even years later. That's not a good way to do business at all.

I think you nee to take off the Ability to sideload android apps. Like any normal people know how to do that or have the newest version of the OS that have this ability. Sorry but if you can't use the pre loaded app store that comes on the phone it doesn't count for about the mass market. As for which side BB 10 is on I think it obvious. It's the one the was for sale and then wasn't. The one that went private and then didn't. The one that has fallen to 4th place behind Microsoft Windows Phone. Listen. I don't think BB10 is bad but there are only so many bad decisions that can be made before there isn't a way to come back. More than the OS, CNN will sink this product because of the decisions which leave the end user hoping they have support for the next few years.

Maybe but I was just paraphrasing what someone would say. It's just reality.

But, in no way was I trying to down play the efforts of those devs. I'm appreciative of their contributions to bring a highly sought after app to the platform and natively. Same for Snap2Chat and every great BlackBerry dev for that matter.

So what? The every day user isn't going to blame FB. They're going to blame the makers of the phone in their hand and get a different phone (if that app is important to them).

Look, sideload, APK, BAR, these are all term that the every day user doesn't want to hear anything about and won't take time trying to understand. People can make all the excused they want, and point to all sorts of roundabout methods to get apps, but you don't make money telling the consumer that they're wrong.
