I was under the impression that the Z10 , uses data not BIS like the legacy devices. My BBM hasn't been working since yesterday, phoned customer care and I was told I have to buy a BBM bundle???

BB10 needs only regular data plan. Can you please tell which carrier are you using?
m using Vodacom South Africa, I've had my phone since April, only now it stopped working so I phoned customer care, they informed me the service was free until end of August. Now I have to pay R19.00 monthly on top of the data. I find it very lame

Carriers have the choice. If they won't give you the plan that you want you may have to go to another provider.

I think m gonna try another provider, coz i jus think it's crap.

Looks like your carrier planning to make this offer more active when BBM goes for Android and IPhone

if they go that way then BBM going cross platform will be a fail, i mean who will be willing to pay for it if he can get free what's up??

There, made an edited and rolled the question into one thread.
I couldn't data-connect on Orange after cancelling BIS package. Orange told me it sounds like a SIM problem and "they were investigating the issue". So "in the meantime" they put me back on bundle.
I'm on MTN South Africa and have a monthly data bundle as part of the contract. When purchasing the contract Vodacom, MTN and Cell C offer free BBM Text(these are free as long as there are no attachments). A lot of people are not checking the offers properly before taking them up with the service providers. Even with Wifi, if the service provider is not allowing it, then u won't be able to BBM.
I don't get it. Does BBM work for you over wifi? You should be on a standard smartphone tariff like iPhone or Android. With BIS gone, I don't see how your carrier can isolate BBM traffic from all the other data usage.

BBM is working with my regular data plan and wifi (= without bis) on orange.

WTF? They can't do that! Are you sure that's not a BIS thing for legacy devices? It sounds like one of the old BlackBerry tariffs and that they can not understand the Z10 is different. Just ask to be put on a standard generic smartphone tariff like iPhone or Android.

I'm on prepaid, thinking of switching to another provider.

Actually they are taking advantage of the fact that BB10 does not have bis. This is being offered only on BB10 devices. I am not sure how it is being done. As I am on contract, I receive BBM via data services and/or wifi.
I'm on Cellc and prepaid too. They have a premium plan of R99 that gives you unlimited BBM and 2GB data monthly. That plan is available for all BB10 devices.
You can choose to make it reoccurring or once off monthly.

Well, I think that's bang out of line. Tell em you want an iPhone tariff. I bet your BBM would just work fine.

will check that out, as it is for now m paying R150 for 1gig and it doesn't last me the whole month .

I'm on MTN 2Gig data contract for R99.00
Calls charged extra. BBM works fine. No additional fee for BBM charged. Can use it via wifi or via MTN network.

I find this odd, I'm on a Vodacom (South Africa) contract and I haven't experienced any of the mentioned issues. I've had my device since March, I receive a monthly data bundle from my carrier and I have wifi at home. I once depleted my data, but I could use bbm when connected to wifi.

Why do the SA Carriers still wanna con the consumers into taking out BB10 plans that offer bugger-all! But unlimited BBM. No one can send unlimited messages. When will they find the time to actually work so that they can pay for the contract! Anyway I'm using a Pre paid data plan, and during office hours I use wifi. Who needs contracts?

Pre-paid often has no data plan option. Some carriers enable data features on a trial basis, but you need a monthly tariff in general to use data.
Carriers have the option. In Canada BIS doesn't cost us a dime. With my carrier I have BIS provisioning even with my Z10. The benefit is I can use any device including older BlackBerry devices without having to add that provisioning
