I cannot recall if I did read it somewhere here or not, but is there some kind of keyboard combination that one could type -- as with older blackberries -- that will show the percentage next to the battery icon on the Home screen?

Or any free or paid battery app out yet that will do so? (I am aware of a paid Wallpapers app that does this but I'd rather not have all a secondary app like this on my phone). Surprising how many battery apps out already, with none that I am aware of that do this basic, important function!

    Any help much appreciated!

Unfortunately, theres not much of anything besides Wallpapers HD that will show the percentage of battery left beside the battery indicator. There are, however, a number of apps that will display the % on their own, and when left in an active frame will update instantly when the battery level changes.
I personally use BX Battery Info for this purpose.

The reason there's no app to do what you are asking is that it's not possible at the present time. All that is possible is the workarounds that you've already found. Eventually, BB may allow developers to implement that functionality but, for the time-being, the active frames and wallpaper-based indicator are the best that can be done.

The API needs to be opened up by BlackBerry in order for 3rd party applications to access the function that you are looking for. I have to believe that BlackBerry will either add this feature themselves or open the API for development in the future. For now you have to leave applications like battery guru or others running in active frame to see current battery percentage. Any dev's or experts can feel free to add some more detail to this reply if I have missed anything or been miss informed.

It's ok, but it uses an active frame which is annoying and also consumes battery...

Any app that updates battery on the homescreen will require leaving it open.
