That would be a lower res than the z10. I just don't see that happening. I would not mind if it was the same res as the z10, after all, the note II and the GSIII are the same res, but I just can't imagine it being lower than the 1280x768 like the z10.

Actually, same res would make app developement easier. Besides, a 5 inch screen would still be very sharp at that res since the 5.5 note II is slightly lower.
3GB if Ram and 32 gb of storage would be a more useful spec boost.

Going crazy with clock speed would only reduce battery. I don't care for a specs war. Just give me specs that actually help.
    400ppi does not help.
    32GB would.

BlackBerry has been saying it will be 1280x720 for a long time now. Most of my apps already support that size.
Does it really matter that much? I personally can't see individual pixels on my Z.

Bur the pixels will be bigger when stretched out to a 5" screen.

so I guess your saying we will have a dot matrix A10, .....in all reality if you put 2 phones side by side one 1080 and another 720 most wouldn't be able to tell the difference or care much.... I said most that doesn't apply to the technopiles

    As a reference, iPad Mini is 7.9" @ 1024x768, 163 ppi

So no. It's only in the minds of people who freaked out at any increase of screen size without increase in screen resolution.

Does anyone know the dot pitch of the Z10 and how it will compare to the dot pitch of proposed A10? That will give a better indication of screen clarity.

The A10 will have its work cut out to look as good as the Z10 though, the screen and display quality are superb. Worth hanging around for updates if only people could overcome frustrations. It's not easy though and some folks do have deal breakers for now. I'm sure they will all be back soon

Yes. My app development is focused on using 720 also.

I can tell my GF's Lumia 920 (4.5" 768x1280) is not as crisp as my Z10, but you have to see them side by side.

Go up to 5", it may very well be noticeable. Remember: even average users read reviews written by technophiles who do notice such things and have competing handsets to compare against.

At 5", the A10 would have DPI of 298 versus the Z10's DPI of 356.

Even if a user--on their own, without influence from tech bloggers--wouldn't care... it's all about the optics (pun intended).

On a screen this small, it's absolutely pointless to have 1080p. An mkv file can be compressed to around 9gb, which makes it slightly better than dvd. 4.5 gb/hr ends up being 75 mb per minute, or just over 1 mb per second.

What I'm getting at is, the phone is not going to be able to receive data that quickly ota. Even if it did, it's not worth it. You will not see the difference between compressed 1080 or 720 on such a small device.

I think the z10 that extra width helps with the typing but on a 5 inch device it would not be needed.

Like I said. iPad mini, 7.9" 163 PPI. I don't see people complaining about its clarity, and all the "HD" apps go there

Isn't there some science whereby at a certain dot pitch (ppi) the human eye cannot discern a difference? As long as the A10 meets that limit then experientially it should be the same as the Z10 surely?

Apple said that "at a certain distance, with a certain dpi, usually people can't see pixels". In my Z10, I don't see jagged lines because of low pixel count, it's mostly because of a certain app's graphics asset don't match (too low).

Anyway, people usually just freak out and scream about dying while it's not really the case. At some point, Samsung is going to introduce a hardware at 4k x 2k screen resolution, at which point humanity reached the "just because" level and everybody runs out of crap to give

Your second point, it makes sense that mismatched screen sizes and paint instructions make for messy graphic appearances.

On the point about human eye pixel detection, weren't Apple just paraphrasing some science though? I know that the human eye colour detection is far below the gradations that can be produced technologically.

If that is the case then your final point is really relevant. I mean what's the point in developing a screen pitch that does not give an experiential improvement?

I find it ironic that the only complaint I've ever heard about the mini is just that - the screen. People are waiting for a mini with Retina I hear.

I really hope that BlackBerry management understand how important screen resolution is to a phone as a selling feature. I think the added cost of a 1080p screen is worth it as it helps to sell the phone even if there is no noticeable difference.
