I read on these forums that if you shoot 16:9 the camera only uses 6 mega pixels, but if you shoot 4:3 it uses the full 8.

Is this true? I have no idea how to test it lol

What aspect ratio do you guys use?

I guess one way to see it is that 16:9 is a cropped version of 4:3 therefore the loss of pixels. Try taking a photo of something from the same position in both aspect ratios, you'll notice a part of the top and bottom of the 4:3 frame gets cropped out to create the 16:9 aspect. I personally prefer to use 4:3 with the higher resolution and crop later if I need too.

From working in photography and also seeing reports, with normal picture taking there is very little visible difference with standard 8X10 inch prints when having a pixel count of more than 3MP. Where a higher pixel count is required is for cropping, zooming in, and or making large prints.

With phone cameras the biggest weak point is with the optics. The lens system is very small. There are limitations when the physical size is reduced. With these types of cameras there is a lot of software correction involved to be able to make nice pictures. Apparently they are doing a good job at it. For regular documentation and non serious photography the phone cameras do a good job for what they are. Nothing beats a good digital SLR camera.

In a digital camera the pixel count is not the only criteria for determination of the photographic quality. A very high pixel count is not as important as the characteristics of the imager itself, the optics, and how the processing is done. Any degradation in the path of the process will become a weak point in being able to have a good quality photo. In high end professional photographic cameras I have seen excellent results from cameras in the range of 6 to 8 MP.

At a 10 inch distance on a screen or printed picture the human eye cannot determine a resolution density of more than about 300 dots per inch.

This is for the L920 camera, but it applies to all cameras.

Technically, I understand the point, but I've tried reproducing this many time and can't really tell a big differrence:

    16:9
    8 vs 6 megapixels. (4:3, 16:9)-img_00000060.jpg

    4:3
    8 vs 6 megapixels. (4:3, 16:9)-img_00000061.jpg

But if the 16:9 is just cropping the 4:3, I'd just have it at the 4:3 setting.

The Lumia is a special case. Most phones actually crop the top and bottom to get the widescreen shot.

Uhh no. The image sensor is a circle. Both aspect ratios are cropped from that circle. You can use math to find that the area covered by a 4:3 rectangle will be greater than a 16:9 inside a circle.

Is there any difference in file size between the two aspect ratios?

I think it's the equivalent of 6mp, I think the photo is just zoomed in a bit and the resulting file size is 1.4 mb.

I prefer taking photos in 16:9 now but most times I take doubles in both formats. I just like the way 16:9 fills the screen with no borders.

I guess the only way to test it, is to try out both ratio's ourself. The pictures posted seem very similar. I think from the pictures posted 4:3, may have a slight advantage?

Of course. The 16:9 photos will be smaller, since they have less pixels.

Only the 920 can do this. http://i.nokia.com/blob/view/-/20006...review-920.pdf

Most of the other smartphone cameras have a 4:3 sensor which gets cropped for widescreen shots.

    16:9

    4:3

    Pictures thanks to:

I just found out that with 16:9 (the default) the images are only 6MP. Switching to 4:3 gives the full 8MP, so the starting resolution on this one is better, and the aspect ratio matches the "target" image.

The only disadvantage I see in taking 4:3 and cropping later would be that every time you save a picture file(jpg) its basically compressing it again and you lose data. If this was a raw file like what Nikon or Canon uses, then cropping and saving again wouldn't lose any data.
