As much as I was excited to see BlackBerry make such huge announcements with the Z30 and 10.2, my biggest focus and concern is regarding the future of BlackBerry.

2 bits of positive news that I saw on the live blog I was following were:
    1. BlackBerry subscriber base is up 300% in Malaysia.
    2. BlackBerry has pledged to continue investing in the ever growing smart phone industry.

I think both these things bode well for what I'm hoping is a turn around in the fortunes of the once great and powerful giant. Any thoughts?

I think BlackBerry is slowly gaining traction throughout the world! Good to see a healthy tripling sub base though! High hopes this becomes a trend in more areas!

Agreed! In North America they might not be the most popular, but in a lot of other countries around the world, Blackberry still has significant market share. Unfortunately most people in Canada/US think that they're the centre of the universe and that if something isn't the most popular there then it isn't popular anywhere else.

Each of us are the center of our own universe. Everything is either in front, behind or beside me, making me the center.

Maybe so but that's what was announced. Just because your friends list got smaller doesn't mean that this isn't true.

So 3 vs 1? lol jk

But seriously, percentage numbers are such a useless metric when no base numbers are given. Hope it is high though

I hate to be critical, but.. I also don't believe everything I read on the interwebs.. Link of this blog? I think the key word here is "blog". I'd love to see Blackberry kick arse in other countries as well as the USA, but I find this hard to believe....

    lets break this down.

Lets assume 1 million, people used BB in Malaysia prior (although I suspect it's higher for that region), that means 3 million new subscribers where added, meaning 3 million new phones. If we assume 10% of that was BB10, the rest legacy.......

Hummm.... might be an interesting ER

It was the live blog from Lucas of N4bb who was attending the event and putting out information in real time.

Does BlackBerry refer to BB10 customers as "subscribers"? I always thought that meant people subscribing to BIS.

Theorically speaking, BB10 are still connected to BlackBerry servers for BBID and BBM, hence the BlackBerry logo next to the network type in the top right screen corner. They are just not managed by them.

That's a hard to believe number, especially considering that Malaysia is one of the best markets in the world already for BlackBerry in terms of marketshare there, though from what I have heard, competition is eating-away at their share there.

The only way I could see that might be true is if either A) the entire market there is up OVER 300% over the same timeframe (and what is that timeframe?), or B) if they were only talking about BlackBerry 10 subscriber base.

Because it's a known fact that the majority of BlackBerry users in Malaysia and a lot of other developing countries has been on the legacy BBOS devices, to this day.
