I'm going to be working in an area without data service but there is wifi.

Is there an app that works with wifi that would allow me to send and receive text messages?

    Thanks,

If you're on BB10, I think they said BBM itself can work via WiFi
Otherwise there's WhatsApp and Kik I know of (Kik requires an account tho)

BBM will work over WiFi. If you need something outside of BBM, I would suggest WhatsApp as it's the most popular, second suggestion would be LINE.

EDIT: Scratch the second suggestion. LINE isn't available for BB10.

    Thanks,

I checked into the WhatsApp but if I understood it correctly everyone has to download the app to send text messages back and forth. Guess it's not really that much different then Skype in some ways?

I thought there was maybe something that could allow regular text messages to work with WIFI.

I don't understand. Text messages are always sent over mobile network, not data. I always turn data off when I'm roaming and I can still send texts. Sms was around before data on mobile devices. Unless you mean that your phone will be disconnected from the network entirely? In which case, I'd say use a combination of email and whatsapp. You will be surprised how many people have got WhatsApp. I know i wad when it searched my contacts for WhatsApp users.

    Thanks,

Sorry on the wrong terminology. I won't have any data services or mobile network. Just wifi.

Most of the people I communicate with don't have any apps...they only have work issued old school flip phones :-)

I only ask as it occurred to me that over here in the UK we have an app on the O2 network that allows calls and texts over wifi without the need to connect to the network. It is called TuGo and is only available for O2 customers. The calls and texts come out of your calling plan and your number remains the same. It may be worth looking into a comparable app for your network as it is a network app not a general one. It was designed for people in just such a situation as yourself. The bad news is it is only available for Ios, Android and BlackBerry OS7. If you're in Britain, it might be a good idea to shove an O2 sim in a cheap phone. O2 is owned by Telefonica so if you're abroad on one of their networks, TuGo may be available.

    Thanks,

I'm in Canada using a Q10 and what you are describing is more what I was looking for.

I also suggest using Whatsapp. I installed it recently at the behest of a friend and have really enjoyed using it so far.

Plus, you can set it to provide notifications via the BlackBerry Hub. It turns out that several of my friends already had it on their phones.
