It will have been almost five years since the last BlackBerry phone that uses BBW will have been released.

    Actually, 2020.

    It's last day is Dec 31, 2019.

Might get an extra day if the IT staff take Jan 1 off for New Years Day. Maybe they'll wait until the 2nd to shut everything off.

All bets are off if it's automated in software.

And they have already killed off the paid app options... you can still access those apps if you already owned them. But you can't buy new apps, unless the developer has some kinda 3rd party solution like Ultimate Backup does.

The only app from the app store I'm still using is CB10. I like it a lot more than the Android version of CB.

I don't play around with apps much, and I've only had to restore my Z10 once in the past 6 years. Its been stable as hell for me since 10.3.3 was released. I'm pretty sure I'll still be using it, at least on WiFi, until I can't find a battery to hold a charge.

Yes, it updates whenever there is new content.

Some app publishers seem to have been kind enough to make formerly-paid apps free. In particular "SMS Backup" (from Epic Windmill) is the one thing I've found that's actually capable of exporting all of my SMS and MMS history. (The Blackberry migration app only does 3500, and only SMS.)

Actually: BlackBerry Leap released March 2015, (So 4years)
Blackberry Passport Silver Edition released August 2015 ( 4years ), and the Operating System BB10 or
BlackBerry 10 was last updated November 2016. (less than 3years ago)
And the BlackBerry Classic's announced end of production was revealed around the 4th of July 2016. (so just 3yrs ago).

    Correction:
Whoops last patch of BB10 was Actually June-Sept(?) 2018, less than a year ago (security patch).

Apart from the Passport SE which was a redress of the 2014 Passport, all BB10 devices were essentially the repacking of the same internals as the 2013 Z10 into various form-factors.

OS 10.3 was released in beta in March of 2014, and, apart from various tweaks, that was basically the end of BB10 development.

One might say tweaks, others would call them among other things important security updates., though as I understand it Android required more, and I don't know if all or even any Androids older than 2years old, ever get any security patches. That's plenty o vulnerable Android phones out there in userland. That plus a constant new Android OS every year to complicate all matters.

(Blackberry Announced no new BB10 SDK's Nov 2015 timeframe, system deemed robust enough - so the development platform finalized, and new API's only if or as needed. beyond that date)

If development had not been ended in 2014... BB10 would have gotten constant new versions every year as well. Most notable they would have switched to 64Bit as planned. But there was a lot of room for refinement with BB10, and like any other "current' OS there always will be improvements to be made.
