I have a blackberry curve, but about 6 months ago I stopped paying the bill for financial reasons. Since the phone isn't working any more will unlocking it still work as long as I use a sim card from a different carrier? I never actually called to cancel the contract, I just stopped paying, however the contact is set to expire this September.

If you're in the US, your phone could have been IMEI blocked. Plus, there's new rules about unlocking phones without carriers' consent. While your phone is eligible for unlocking because it's in the grandfathered time frame, I'm not sure what the rules say about unlocking phones not paid off.

That being said...pay the balance on the phone. It's pretty much stealing what you're thinking of doing.

They only stipulation to unlocking without carrier permission is that the phone be purchased in our before January 25, 2013. And this only applies to US carriers.
