The warranty voiding thing is ONLY if a 3rd party SIM causes damage to your handset.

As others have already said in this thread (and many other threads)... Just call Verizon... What's the worst that can happen? They say no?

I'm on the phone with them right now, and the CS rep says unlocking the phone voids the warranty (lol)... I just said okay, now I'm on hold waiting for the right "department"

Now, they said i need to go to the retail store where I bought the phone to from to confirm that I bought the phone. I hang up. Calling back again.

This guy has no clue whatsoever he doesnt know what "unlock code" is. He told me to to return the phone. I told him to transfer me to VZW executive relations. This person say's that he doesn't have a phone number for Executive Relations. calling again.

This lady says, "your not suppose to use different sim card" Hang up calling again... this is frustrating.

Another lady who has no idea...

    I finally got it unlocked!!

I just tried to call and get mine unlocked. I played the dumb approach and Said I am going to Costa Rica in a few months(Which is True). My friend went and had not but issues with his 8830. What are my options? She said well they can unlock the phone. Playing dumb I said what is that? She explained and then claims it voids the warranty. Does it truly void the warranty? Given I have insurance on the phone does that really matter? Or if I develop issues will it be $50 Deductible every time?

So I got mine unlocked but want to make sure I did it correctly. When I go to OPTIONS>ADVANCED OPTIONS>SIM CARD

At the top, it should now say "SIM Card: Security Disabled"? This means its unlocked right? I entered the 16 digit code and it said it was successful

Sounds like as long as you choose an exotic location they don't hesitate when they know what you are talking about.

Sounds like I will be making a trip to the Galapagos Islands next month!

I'm a Verizon customer and am not interested in switching carriers. Just out of curiosity, why is everyone unlocking their phones? Are you planning to move to AT&T or TMobile? I may be traveling to Italy in a few months, but I'm new to the whole SIM card unlocking thing and am curious if there is any real benefit to me to call and get the phone unlocked. Also, if I unlock my phone does that mean that it won't work on Verizon anymore?

Right now, your phone is locked to Verizon only. You can not take a SIM card you get from Italy and insert it to the phone because it wont allow you. If you were to unlock the phone, you can insert any SIM card and it will recognize and work.

If you unlock, you can still use Verizon. All you're doing is releasing the lock on specific carrier.

Thanks, but one more question. Will my phone work in Italy without doing anything with the Verizon SIM or do I still have to unlock before I travel regardless?

Finally got mine unlocked today just called Verizon told them i wanted the unlock code the guy just gave it to me.
He just said he wouldn't walk me through it i had to do it myself (thanks crackberry) that was easy.
I wanted it as i have sim cards for UK,Dubai, and Ireland.
Thanks to all you guys for posting made my life easy.

CALLMEBOB it will work in Italy as long as you have asked Verizon to allow international calls (watch the charges they mount up!!!)

    Thanks

Honestly I think it's just a matter of who you get. On my first try (literally hours after activating my VZW Storm) I called *228 and asked for Global. The guy at Global said it "wasn't a problem" and even walked me through it.

I will borrow a friend's SIM and see what the results are using EDGE locally...

Yea...You can unlock it and leave the Verizon SIM card in the phone and it will still work. Like the other user said, you're just releasing the lock on the phone which forces you to use Verizon.

For example, I travel to Asia for work frequently and our company usually gives their employees a TMobile BlackBerry for trips so we dont have to expense each phone call and get an international BlackBerry plan. Instead of taking two phone with me, I was able to take the SIM card out of the TMobile BlackBerry and put it in my Storm and just force the phone to use GSM rather than CDMA.
