I imagine this would not work because I have heard nothing about it, but I want to make sure/know why it does work.

Why can't you unlock the CDMA Spring 8330 and use it (with GPS) on the Verizon network?

CDMA devices are not locked. It's simple a matter of the carrier adding the device to their network. As far as I know neither Verizon nor Sprint have allowed this. It's up to them as it's only a company policy that prevents it.

Does each company use different ESNs so they would know if the device belongs to them or not?

The ESN is specific to each individual device and it need to be added to the carriers system in order for the device to work. Both Verizon and Sprint have not allowed for this to take place. This is one of their policies that annoyed me for so long when I was with Verizon. Hopefully they will change their policy at some point.
