So, I'm about to get my mitts on a 8300 but it is locked to one carrier (Movistar) and I use another (Telcel)... this is in Mexico. I want to unlock it but I would like to know if there are any risks... I've seen some listings where the devices say they have no PIN because they were unlocked, is this true? Also, I've visited sites where they sell unlock codes but I haven't seen any for my country, can I get a code somehow or can it be flashed? Sorry if this is too basic to ask...

The easiest and most cost effective way to unlock a phone is to call the original carrier and ask them for the unlock code. It usually helps to tell them the phone will be used outside the country on another carrier while on vacation or something. Most of the time they will just give it to you.

I have not heard of any problems with PIN #s being deleted or anything like that before. I have unlocked 5 or 6 BBs for coworkers with out any trouble.
