I was hoping someone could shed light on unlocking the new BlackBerry Curve 8330 for Verizon.
Unfortunately, nobody can. There are two main technologies from cell phones: GSM and CDMA (there are more than two, but these are the two most popular).

GSM is used by T-Mobile and AT&T (as well as some smaller carriers) in the states. It's the dominate technology in Europe, from my understanding. It uses SIM cards to hold account information that then interface with the phone. You can own multiple phones and swap SIM cards in and out almost at will. The major hindrance to this is locked phones. That is where a phone is programmed to only accept SIM cards from one specific network. This thread is about removing that restriction.

CDMA is used by Sprint, Verizon and Alltel (as well as some smaller carriers). There are no SIM cards with CDMA. The phone is directly tied to the account. Switching phones entails doing an ESN swap. Typically this has to be done by visiting a retail store and paying a fee. No CDMA carriers that I know of will accept a phone that was originally made for another network. So your Verizon phone will only ever work on Verizon's network. You can't take it to Sprint... and you can't use a phone from Sprint on Verizon's network.

Sprint doesn't even know what an unlock code is. 99% of their phones do not have unlock codes as they use CDMA (see my last post in this thread). The few phones that they do have are their international phones. I had one that was originally purchased for Nextel that I needed to make work with an international SIM card from Sprint but the phone was SIM locked to Nextel. I spent weeks trying to get the unlock code out of Sprint/Nextel to no avail. Every time I called or went to a Nextel store or any of the above I got dumb looks (I'm sure the person on the other end of the line had a blank look on their face). I finally ended up paying a third party to unlock it for me.

    Hi all!
I just called AT&T to try to get the unlock code for my BB Curve 8310 by telling them I'm traveling overseas, but the rep told me I can't unlock it unless I sign up for the international plan (forgot what it's called) that's $5.99/month.

Has anyone been able to get their phone's unlock code from AT&T?

    Thanks!

You do not have to sign up for any package. All you have to tell them is to enable international roaming. Also, tell them that you do not plan on using at&t service there. You want to purchase a prepaid sim from the country in which you will be in becase it is cheaper. They will unlock it. I have done it plenty of times.

I've been reading all the post regarding the unlock code, so, unless you call the carrier/provider, you will not be able to get the unlock code...? Is this because of the IMEI...?

Correct. If you want the unlock code for free, call the carrier. You could also pay an unlocking service, but why pay for it when you can get it for free???

The only issue with that is that I have service with AT&T, and the curve I have is with T-Mobile. I'm assuming I would have to contact T-Mobile, but would they give me the code even though they are not my providers....?

I have just bought a BB8800, second hand. Tis in perfect condition. Unfortunately, it is with Tmobile and I'm with ATT. Can I drop my ATT sim in or do I need a "Crack"? If I need a crack, can I call Tmobile or would the previous owner need to call.

I'm a total newbe here.. Thanks for all help. I hope to have a long life on these forums!!

    Chris,

There is no "unlock" software that is available like the Nokia handsets. The unlock code is dependent upon the IMEI. The carrier you have service with will provide the unlock code. Give them a call.

Received the unlock code for my daughter's Pearl from AT&T, ran through the procedure (thanks Bla1ze), and everything appears to have worked as it should. However, does anyone know how, other than by trying to insert a non-AT&T SIM card, one can validate whether the unlocking actually worked?

MikeQuery: go to options > advanced options > sim card
type mepd (you will see nothing when you type this) if
"Network" shows Disabled, it is unlocked

    Forget Rogers for the code.

Somebody must have a keygen for these codes and is either hoarding it to make some easy cash. Tell me these guys are legit business men before I hand over $20.

I just called AT&T and told them I am travelling to Europe and I need my phones Subsidy Unlock Code. She asked for my IMEI # and then she gave me the unlock code.

I typed it in the phone and that was it. Easy and Free.

    Thanks

So I got my Subsidy Unlock code from AT&T today. They gave it to me over the phone. It was a 16 digit number. I entered it by going through Options - Advance Options - Sim Card and typing MEPD and MEPP and ALT 2 and the 16 digit code when prompted for the MEP code. The phone accepted it so I reboot the phone and everything seemed fine. Is there anything else I need to do? I mean it didn't ask me if I wanted to lock or unclock or anything so I was just wondering if that was it or if I'm missing a step. Like how do I know I did it correctly and it is now unlocked. Thanks mucho

if you go to Options - Advance Options - Sim Card and the top says security disabled, then it is unlocked
