No. If you want a free unlocking code you will need to get it from your carrier.

Your other option is to enter one of the contests that are currently running in the Unlocking forum.

Most carriers do not release their codes unless with the company for certain period of time and there are plenty of unlocking services in this forum.

would some kindly explain what unlocking a phone does? Is it just so you can use a phone with a service provider that wasnt the one that sold you the phone? example using an att blackberry with tmobile. or is it something more?

It could be to use your device with a different carrier in your country, but the main advantage is if you are traveling to another country and do not wish to pay international charges. You can get a SIM card (and in many cases prepaid BIS plan) that allows you to use your device much cheaper than if you paid your carrier's international plan.

Most carriers charge an arm and a leg to roam on other carrier networks...

Number would be whatever the prepaid carrier assigns you lol. You would have to search locally to see who they are.
