Hi folks, I followed the instructions specifically the buttons that needs to be pressed and it worked. However, I'm being asked to enter MEP code 10digits. What is this?

that's the code that would make your BlackBerry work with any SIM card (from just about any GSM carrier)

Can I choose any number I like? I remember seeing a message saying "Enter Subsidy Code". Is that number for it?

Mods, if i upgrade my 8320 to the new dot-180 OS, would it lock itself back to t-mo only? although i think if it gets unlocked, it should be unlocked for life.. but it never hurts to ensure

So at the risk of being exceptionally stupid, can anyone walk me through the following scenario? I have an 8830 and the instructions about how to get it to ask me for the MEP code are clear and work fine. I have a Vodafone SIM card from the UK. How can I get the Vodafone SIM card from the UK to spill its secret MEP code so that I can enter it into the 8830? Or is it not that easy?

    Thanks in advance.
From having read through the thread, I believe I can buy a new 8310 from Vodaphone here in the UK and then unlock it to use my existing T-Mobile SIM (that I currently use in a Cingular 8800 I bought and unlocked in NY) instead. My question is: I am I still going to be stuck with a contract with Vodaphone with some kind of break penalty?
    Thanks

crack, very likely. Your contract with Voda has nothing to do with unlocking the 8310.

You guys can alway just call ATT and ask for the code, if you hear any sort of complaining from them all you need to do is tell them that they are legally obliged to provide the unlock code on request, i have tried this with a blackjack after i owned the phone for about 4 days and with 3 other phones, i don't know the name of actual law but if anyone has free time go ahead and look it up

Ok, here is my deal. I recently purchased an 8320 locked to T-Mobile for use on Suncom. I have the unlock code, but I'm unable to get to the Network MEP box. When I try to enter MEP2 nothing is happening, and yes I'm holding the ALT key. Thanks-

Nice forum guys from a blackberry curve newbie.

The law that allowed unlocking is called the DMCA, the Digital Millinium Copyright Act. It was passed in November 2006 and is ONLY good for 3 years!

In another year the copyright office will seek comments from people and they have to prove why the unlock exemption should be renewed. If they do that, then it will be good for another 3 years or until congress incorporates it into law.

Anyone wants to know more, just ask.

Before spending any money, go ahead and give your service provider a call. It might work out. I got my first blackberry (curve 8300) last week, previous phone was an old nokia, so I am still unfamiliar with everything. However it seemed really easy to just call AT&T and ask for the code. Maybe I got lucky?

    Codes aren't free.
    Codes *should* be free.

The carriers shouldn't be allowed to lock the devices in the first place. By locking the devices all they've done is create a "black-market" full of questionable people selling unlock codes for ridiculous prices. It is distasteful and highly suspect, with lots of potential for unsuspecting people to be ripped off.

$25 to unlock a $500 phone seems pretty reasonable to me...and to the many people that enjoy using their unlocked phones...I agree the providers should not be allowed to lock their phones in the first place.

I just have a question, I am about to unlock my device but, is there any minimal chance of screwing it up? I mean I bought the device in the US, and Im back home for vacation for 1 month and I want to use it here with my provider, but, if I screw it up and then when go back to the US in one month and I am not be able to use the phone I would kill myself jajajajaj...

Just let me know the chancess and I make my decision Thanks in advance

An unlock code is the ONLY way to unlock a BB. There is no "software unlock" for a BB.

I've done all the menu items, but when I type in MEPE, nothing happens, it does not ask my for anything else, any suggestions. (It's funny everybody else is hunting for the code, I have it, but cannot enter it.)

    Thanks

The unlock procedure is standard across all BB devices, no matter what carrier you have as long as you have the unlock code....refer back to the beginning of this thread...all your answers lye there
