You can unlock the 8830WE at HorizonWirelessOnline.com - Horizon Wireless, The World’s Cellular Repair Center . Use the Live Support.

Q.) Can I unlock the 8830 to be used on ATT (cingular) or T-Mobile?
A.) NO. The 8830’s GSM operates in the 900 / 1800 Mhz band where as T-Mo and AT&T use 850 / 1900 in the united states. You can not do ANYTHING to make this work. If you want a 8800 series, buy the 8800 or 8820 which is GSM.

HowardForums: Your Mobile Phone Community & Resource - Blackberry 8830 can't be used as GSM?

...since mine doesn't say Blackberry 8830 IR that it wouldn't work at all even with a sim card as a GSM...
There is a model RIM8830IR. The original 8830 was only compatible with the TravlComm sim card. The IR version will work the a sim card now provided by alltel.
There are two versions, the 8830 will roam outside the US/Canada via a seperate number/sim card purchased elsewhere. The 8830IR will roam internationally using your ALLTEL number via a special sim card provided only by Alltel and the roaming charges will appear on your Alltel bill. (one number, one bill, one voicemail)

The reason for that is because Bell Mobility's 8830 is NOT locked. You can use any sim card in it when traveling outside of North America.

Check the MEPD screen. If it shows network disabled then it is unlocked.

I was told by 3 people at Bell that the phone automatically unlocks outside of North America, however a friend told me that the BB 8830 didn't work in Asia. I am travelling to New Zealand and they use GSM and I was hoping to get a Sim card from a local supplier so I have cell service while away.

Can someone confirm if this will work outside of North America or not. Thank You!!!!

Never heard of that before. Once unlocked it's unlocked.

My bell 8830 registers no SIM card when the SIM slot is empty, and otherwise reads network: active when the Bell SIM is installed. I guess this means I'm screwed?

Remember that 8830 will only work overseas once unlocked, the phone is not compatible with the GSM frequencies in North America.

The 8830 is locked to Bell's network out of the box. We can unlock it, but it will not workk on any GSM carrier in North America. It can only be used in Europe and Asia (once unlocked)
