I see that you're on Claro network. It seems to me that it depends on which country you're in. Each country seems to be on different bands for their service. It has to match the band on your unlocked T-Mobile 9700.

    3G Network on T-Mobile is 1700/2100
    3G Network on T-Mobile UK, AT&T, ROGERS I believe is 1900/2100

Majority of 3G networks around the country is 1900/2100 and I think T-Mobile USA only has 1700/1900

If he/she is using Claro, the network is around Jamaica, South America area.

In quick summary, most of the world uses 1900/2100mhz bands for 3G (including Rogers and at&t). T-mobile and I think Wind in Canada use 1700/2100mhz for 3G so those phones WILL NOT have 3G service in most of the world.

ok, theres a couple things going on here. just to clear some junk up...

in order to use UMA, you need a compatible phone and service. just having a UMA device will do you no good. having a UMA device without UMA service (such as tmobile), the user can still use wifi for data, but not for making calls.

an unlocked tmobile branded 9700 will include the 3G bands of 1700/2100. this makes the phone incompatible with the other 3G bands in the united states and some other countries. therefore, unless your carrier uses 1700/2100, you will not get 3G.

according to wikipedia, it looks like most of Claro's 3G coverage is on the 850mhz band, not 1700/2100 mhz. the exception to this is in brazil, which rolled out 2100mhz 3G service.

so, depending on where in south america the OP is, chances are they will not get 3G on their device no matter what. they need to purchase an at&t branded 9700 in order to use the 3G services in their country.

i would think yes. but you are gonna get raped by the airline for accessing it $$$ wise unless its a decent flat fee for the flight.

    Ok to the OP:
If you go to Settings|About, which 3G bands does it say? Does it say 1,4,8?
What SIM are you using? A local Claro? T-Mo US?
