Does anybody know whether this is a hardware issue, or hopefully a fixable software problem? I love this device, but the weak vibration may turn out to be a dealbreaker for me if it can't be improved.
I have been reading about the vibration issue (no Tour yet) and remember similar complaints about the 8830 which is what I have. And it was quite weak in the vibration department but I think (maybe my imagination) that it got stronger over time. I don't know what the mechanism is but maybe it loosens or tightens up after a while allowing the vibrations to get stronger????
I wonder if other 8830 folks have experienced this, too.
I'm coming from a 8703e, so the vibration on the Tour seems a bit weaker.
To compensate, I've gone into the options (options->Ring Tones/Alerts) and changed it from the standard 'medium' length vibration to a 'long' length vibration.
its very weak compared to my 8330 - that phone was so powerful when it vibrated, i could hear it across the room!
I ended up never using ringers, because i could always hear it vibrate, and if it was on a desk, or other hard surface forget it, it was like someone was using a hammer-drill to knock through concrete!
The tour is Very weak (as was my replacement 8330 before it) and saddens me, but i do like the new vibration options, yet disappointed it STILL will not vibrate and ring at the same time
I really have not had a single issue with the vibration on this phone and I came from the 8330 which was strong. I where it, in a holster, at work all day and have the vibrations set from short to long and also a certain quantity for each email address, phone calls or text messages and I have yet to have an issue knowing exactly which it was.
I just picked up the tour and the vibration is very weak to the point where you can't even really hear it in the holster or feel it. my razr you can actually hear the vibration.
i came to this conclusion, rim purposely made this phone to vibrate low in a quite discreet manner because it would not be heard during business meetings? ionno

I think it is weaker than a lot of phones - sure. However, there is nothing worse than a vibrating phone that everyone can hear in a conference room. You might as well leave the ringer on. A vibrating phone should be felt not heard!
I agree with the other comment here that it gets stronger with use.
its stronger for me than the storm but ive had phones where the thing starts to move on the table when it vibrates. i wish you could just change the settings because ive missed calls etc in my pocket
I've used the Bold, 8300, 8310 Storm and a couple other older Blackberries. Definitely the weakest vibrate yet. Also bugs me that it won't vibrate and ring at the same time.
I hate to do this, because I don't like to promote the "exchange your phone for the the most inconsequential thing" mentallity, but I had two Tours prior to the "green-dot" Tours coming out in August, and the vibrate was extremely weak. Weaker than the Storm I had before, which itself was MUCH weaker than the Curve 8330 I had before it- so weak that I basically considered it useless to notify me.
Then I had the trackball problem and exchanged it for yet another Tour, and this time got a "green dot" Tour . I was startled the first time it vibrated because it was SOOOO much stronger than the first two Tours I had. Definitely stronger than the Storm and close (but not quite) to the Curve 8330. I am happy to again have USEFUL vibrate notifications!
Take them back... we all paid the same thing and clearly there are Tours out there (prior to the green-dot Tours) that are not made equal.
EDIT: BTW, I had various OSes on the first two Tours... including 5.0 versions and none of them made an iota of difference... this is a hardware thing.

Strong.
Weak.
It's all relative.
My last phone was an older Nokia that I could feel vibrating even if I was on my riding mower. The BB Tour vibrate is more subtle, not noticeable by others if you are in a meeting, but often it is so subtle, I miss the call entirely.
