A friend of mine said last week that he's had his Tour since launch and has never seen the 3G network on his Tour. I got the Tour this morning and the salesman said the Verizon automatically switches between their 3G network and their 1XEV network. I've had this phone for about four hours now and so far I have not need the 3G network connect, and when I try to do it manually it says that there is no connection.
Am I missing something? I'm in the Washington DC area so I know the signal is VERY strong.
Thanks for the reply. This is my first Verizon phone. I've only dealt with TMO and ATT ever. It's just odd because if I go into options I can see an options for "3G"...which is why I'm confused.
As ryoujyoku says that 3G is when you are roaming on the overseas GSM networks.
It never made sense to me why Verizon/Sprint stuck with the 1XEV thing. It doesn't really roll off the tongue easy, nor is it ad friendly
Yeah, it's not easy to say. I'm so used to saying "EDGE" and "3G"...the "1XEV" is just odd to say. Thanks for the help all! Playing with my new BB Tour now!
as an aside, if you use the 9630 on a US GSM carrier, you will NOT get 3G at all, only overseas. i think this is because of the 3g frequencies in the US.

So, basically there is no "3G" network with the Tour in the US? My Tour will only run on the comparable "EDGE" network here?
1X = CDMA2000, speeds slightly slower than EDGE (2G, tho EDGE is is sometimes referred to as 2.5G)
1XEV = EVDO Rev. A, or speeds slightly slower than HSDPA (3G, though HSDPA is sometimes thought of as 3.5G)
1) 3G is a generic term for DSL-like speeds through the cell phone.
2) 1x is NOT equal to EDGE but is similar.
3) .591 just don't work with Driphter's patch unfortunately.
4) Holy thread bump Batman!
