tour: worth the upgrade over curve: anyone have a curve and go back to it?
- I know there have been lots of threads like this. I have 1 year old curve on vzw. Works just fine. Wish browser was better, but asside from that, ok.
Was lusting after tour before it came out, but after reading posts, not so sure it's the best thing since sliced bread that I wished it was. Seems to have some issues. Not knocking it, everything has issues and the grass isn't usually greener on the other side of the fence.
I don't need to upgrade, waiting to see what happens with storm 2 and also if curve 8900 comes out with wifi this year. Really would like wifi on my next phone.
Are there really build and quality issues with the tour? Does it need a rev of the OS? I see a whole thread for people who can't connect via bluetooth in their car! Plus it's a hassle moving things over and setting things up, I don't want to do so if it's not going to be a keeper.
Anyone try out the tour and say, 'nah, not enough better than the curve to keep it?'08-02-09 06:13 PMLike 0 - I've only had my Tour since yesterday, but i am LOVING it. No way I'd go back to the Curve, which I was actually very happy with. The increased speed, memory, and screen quality are the major selling points for me. I haven't had a single problem (although the boot-up is S-L-O-W). No problems with bluetooth or call quality or trackball or anything else. Very happy with this purchase.08-02-09 06:28 PMLike 0
- I had the Curve, went to the Storm for 6 months and then when the Tour came out I jumped on it. It had all the great features of my Storm but with the characteristics of the Curve. If I was you, I'd go with the Tour.08-02-09 06:50 PMLike 0

1) Boot time of the Tour was agonizingly slow.
2) The keyboard and trackball response gradually got more and more sluggish.
3) On day 10 things got really wonky. The "n" key would lock the keyboard. Even after whiping the Tour the keyboard was weird.
4) EVDO Rev A wasn't "that" much faster than the Curve's EVDO.
5) The ringer profiles of the Tour were not customizable compared to the Curve's.
6) Bluetooth audio level from the "other person's" perspective is low.Last edited by schmidtj; 08-04-09 at 07:44 AM.
08-02-09 07:42 PMLike 0 - I had a Curve 8330 w/ VZW and upgraded to the Tour. I couldn't be happier. It's much better than the Curve on so many levels.08-02-09 07:50 PMLike 0
- Honestly, I was in the exact same boat as you 2 weeks ago. I had the curve 8330 for almost a year and i loved it. It was my first blackberry so i thought it was great. When the storm came out I decided to try it out and loved it.. for a while. After around 5 or 6 months of having it, I get a whole bunch of issues. When the tour came out, I got it. I can definately say that it is the best phone I have ever had. It has the keyboard and trackball that I loved about my curve and all the great features of the storm. You wont regret it.. - Thanks for the info. I was kinda worried since I have read many threads about problems with the tour. Part maybe that people with problems post, and many happy users just read and don't post.
Not worried about boot time, it takes my curve much longer to boot than my treo, my treo takes longer than my old lg 'dumb' phone, etc.
Was worried about the trackball issue, the supposedly 'shoddy' build, etc. Seems like most who had curves are happy. great to hear.08-02-09 09:33 PMLike 0 - I love my Tour and would never consider going back to my Curve.I haven't had any issues with my Tour since day one-no trackball issues, loose cover or slow lag time! I am one of the lucky ones that got a great working BB!

1) Yes! My Tour took about 5 minutes to boot. My Curve takes about 3.
2) Didn't care for the Tour's keyboard. Felt too flat, also didn't like the placement of the shift keys.
3) No keyboard problems like yours, but my Tour would freeze and become unresponsive for about 5-10 seconds sometimes. No data indicators or hourglass displayed.
4) Agree.
5) I noticed this as well.
I have boxed my Tour up after 14 days. It will be shipped back for a refund.

The keyboard is not great - the keys are slippery and the pointiness of them does you no good. Curve keyboard is much easier to type on, though it's louder. The Tour does have a really nice LCD, but I would really keep the Curve if I were you...
(I have both and also the Palm Pre and the Pre and Curve easily beat the Tour in terms of typing speed and accuracy. I've also got the notorious unresponsive trackball which is driving me mad. Waiting for a replacement...

2. The OS is fine, snappy and responsive. It can be tweaked with leaked versions released in the future, but that's the case with all BBs.
3. I don't have BT in my car so can't answer that.
I used to own a 8830, then the Curve 8330, and then switched to the Bold and now a Tour (because I need VZW).
I loved the Curve's form factor incredibly, but I absolutely was appalled with the ancient OS and hardware on the Curve. Tour's screen makes the Curve look like something from the mid 80s, it's really that stunning. I seem to blaze thru accuracy and speed with the Bold/Tour keyboard. It's ridges help you "feel" keys easier and the fact that there is no space allows me to glide from key to key (if the letters are adjacent). One thing I hated about the Curve was the incredibly slow speed. I would always have to wait as it processed. You really notice a huge difference once you have a "modern day processor". My brother uses my Curve now and I can't possibly imagine going back to that.
If you're 1 yr in, don't bother. But make sure to grab a new BB. Regardless, I can say that the Tour is the best BB out there now as a owner of 4 different BBs. The only Curve that's really nice these days is the 8900.Last edited by redwanhuq; 08-03-09 at 08:20 PM.
08-03-09 08:12 PMLike 0 - (I have both and also the Palm Pre and the Pre and Curve easily beat the Tour in terms of typing speed and accuracy.)............I have no idea how anybody can brag about the Pre's keyboard...has to be the worst keyboard I have ever used on a mobile device...the keys are flat and round a provide very little feedback and they are just too small.....Pre keys were the deal breaker for me...but the battery life didn't help either....

Those of you who went back to the Curve need to teach me how to have more patience. I got very frustrated by the Curve because it was always hanging up causing me to have to watch the pinwheel/hourglass spin. The Tour is just so much faster that it's hard to even fathom going back......Honestly as many have stated previously, the Tour is a marginal upgrade from the Curve but it is certainly a worthwhile one. The only really issues I have had with my Tour is the loose battery but I was able to fix that very easily. Other than that, it is a wonderful device that makes the you more productive with the added speed. Honestly I am very pleased with my Tour and think you will be too....Last edited by JR_Rider; 08-04-09 at 09:33 AM. Reason: double quote
