Top Plastic Piece Extremely Clicky?
- I'm on my third tour now after returning one for a faulty back cover and the other for a piece that kept popping out, and my third one was perfect until I noticed that the piece of plastic on top of the screen (displaying the blackberry logo) clicks whenever I press it to my ear or press it from the top. I don't want to have to return a third phone, but it's pretty irritating hearing the clicking on every call I make. Has anyone experienced this problem and been successful in dealing with it?

- If I were picky I would have returned the thing already. I've seen some pretty absurd complaints on this board and I would think that one regarding a problem that directly affects call quality is viable.08-26-09 10:01 PMLike 0

Thanks08-26-09 10:03 PMLike 0 - I don't have the problem when I put it up to my ear though I barely have mine touching my ear when I use it for calls. Mine does make a creaky sound if I push down on it with my finger. Just now I tried pressing it to my ear and it doesn't make a sound so perhaps that is a defect on yours.08-26-09 10:08 PMLike 0
- I have the same problem on mine! I noticed it the other day when I was talking. I was telling the person I was talking to that their phone was messing up. But turns out it was mine! Its annoying but its minimal.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com08-26-09 10:20 PMLike 0 - I only noticed this tonight and I wasn't even looking for this thread.
Mine only creaks when I press it. But it is very frustrating - I feel like its going to get worse over time. This my first Tour and first blackberry.
Frankly I have to say that the quality of the phone is not all that. It looks like it would just about last 2 yrs with careful handling. My old samsung (which was known as the brick) seems like a rock compared to this.
The old curve and even the 8900 seem to have better builds. That battery cover seems so thin and weak - and their workaround with a foamsticky on the side of the battery cover - reminds of the fixes I used to do with my old Ford Escort.I also don't hold much hope for the trackball having a long life either.
Will I keep it, I am not sure. The device is great in terms of speed, OS, etc.
I order my Tour last week to make sure all the trackballs, battery covers, etc.. issues had gone.
My final rant is with the Desktop Mgr. - god that Roxio thing is crap - for some reason I cannot see the 2GB microSD card in windows unless I throw it into a reader.08-27-09 12:08 AMLike 0 - Mine was creaky on my first two tours. I have gotten my 3rd today which was a "green dot" and this one has no creaks and the trackball finally works!08-27-09 12:39 AMLike 0

- The top plastic piece is held in with double sided tape and four very, very tiny tabs. I have a feeling that in the assembly process, some weren't aligned very well, so they are not flush with the piece underneath, causing the creaking when you push down on it.
How can it be fixed? You could try taking the piece off and "realigning" it. But more than likely you'll end up breaking one of the tiny tabs, and it will be even looser.
That being said, I did break one of my tabs when I took apart my Tour to do a keypad mod. Still, I hardly ever notice the creaking. I have to press down pretty hard to get it to creak.08-27-09 01:52 AMLike 0 -
- I've had my tour for about 2 months and the first month the creaking was real bad, but now going into 2nd month (with heavy texting/email use) the creakings is next to gone, sometimes it happens but very very faint. I have to make it creak if i want to hear it. Im assuming its because of all the typing? I also lock the phone a lot so i hit the top left button almost hourly so maybe that had an effect.
But in short, my creaking went away, hopefully all of yours does too.
P.S mine is one of the Mexico 5's, built back in April.08-27-09 09:50 AMLike 0 - My first two creaked at the earpiece also-even when just holding and typing. The sprint bat door also creaked. This is why I went to vzw and asked for their bat door-its much more solid. My 8830 - all 6 of them over 3 years all developed that annoying creak. It feels and sounds so cheap! However, the tour appears to have been MUCH better as far as manufacturing is concerned. My third and hopefully last tour was manufactured august 11th, and I haven't noticed any creaking yet...it appears they've made some minor changes...we'll see...

I don't know if the part is defective or it's just not put together properly. If it's not put together properly, how would we go about fixing it ourselves?08-28-09 07:54 PMLike 0 -
- I was able to remove the top cover and I found out a few things. A majority of the creaking is caused by a terrible application of double sided tape. At the very bottom of the top cover is a strip of double sided tape. The tape on my cover was was all crumbled up and twisted. I removed the tape and put the piece back on with some of my own double sided tape. The clicking sounds were greatly reduced after that. However there is still some clicking. Basically I think the 4 plastic tabs that hold the piece to the phone are too long or not strong enough to hold the piece in place tightly.
Otherwise my Tour is perfect so I don't know if I should ask for another refurb or not.08-30-09 12:45 AMLike 0 - Mine creaks too. And you know what? It sounds exactly like a bad application of double sided tape! I noticed this day one. Verizon is sending me a brand new Tour which I will have on Tuesday. Hopefully, I won't have to go through more than 2 of them to get a flawless piece.08-30-09 05:21 PMLike 0
