Sprint Tour in Mexico
Hi all, this isn't one of those posts asking whether or not the Tour will work in Mexico, but rather I want some specific info if any of you has it.
I had Sprint turn on international roaming and I know that if I call or get a call, it'll be $1.69 per minute, but I also had them unlock the SIM card slot in case I see a prepaid card that is cheaper down there.
I want to be able to have it in case of an emergency so I don't expect to make many calls.
I know that Telcel is the major carrier in Mexico but I was wondering if anyone has specifics on how much a prepaid card costs down there and what the rate for US calling is? I tried searching the Telcel website but wasn't able to cull much info from there. I also searched other sites that sold "international sim cards" but they cost upwards of $50 for the card alone, I'm going on vacation so I don't need to be THAT connected haha.
So I was wondering if my fellow CB users have been in a similar situation and if they had any info I could use.
I figure if a card and say 20 mins of talk time costs me less than international roaming would cost me, it'd be worth buying it. I figure 20 mins would cost me roughly $34 so I'm looking to spend less than that if I can.
Any useful replies would be much appreciated! Thanks

Hmm...I would assume that a majority of Mexican's use prepaid to get the job done.
Maybe you can buy a cheap prepaid phone (usually comes with minutes and a SIM) activate it, then take the card and put it in your phone.
You WILL have a different number when you switch to GSM but at least you will be connected in case of an emergency.
I would do a little more research to see what more is actually available. Hope this helps you out a little bit.

ya I'm aware of the different number and what not, I don't mind that so much. Like I said, my big thing is being able to call if I need to, and not paying more than I have to. Thanks for your help though!

Remember to turn off data if you stay with Sprint SIM...

I used my storm in mexico in june but I activated the intl data plan before I left and just canceled when I got back but the talk time is expensive . You can get a prepaid sim with either, Telcel, Movistar, od Pegasso but if your going to be calling back to the states its gonna almost the same.

I'm in Mexico now with my Sprint Tour. I don't think the SIM card is worth it unless you are going to do a fair amount of in country calling. Then you have the different # issue and calls to US are still not cheap. I just activated Intl roaming as I'm using it only for short urgent work calls. Plus my company will reimburse for business calls.
Rather than turning off data, I went to the Spring BIS website and filtered all but a few specific email adressess. That way a bunch of spam does not push to my BB. Now you can use email to communicate to U.S. fairly cheaply as a short email does not use too much data. If you use mobile websites your data usage will be reasonable and you control how much. Then just use you Sprint roaming if you have to make an urgent call. Data in Mexico should be a little over $2 MB which will do lots of short emails.
If you want to spend more time on the phone to U.S., I would consider Skype at 2 cents/minute.
