right up front, i'm a n00b here. i have every expectation that most of you will think i'm an *****, and feel free to flame away, but i need to ask:

are PRL's unique to a particular device/mfgr, or are they particular to a provider?

Different carriers have different PRLs from other carriers.

Typically, within a particular carrier, there will be a PRL for advanced devices (including BlackBerry devices and other smartphones) and a different one for regular phones.

Why would you need to know this information?

And if you need to update your PRL, you can access it through:
    OPTIONS>MOBILE NETWORK>MOBILE NETWORK>UPDATE PREFERRED LIST

That doesn't apply to all phone carriers. In fact, I believe it's only for Sprint.

For Verizon, that's not how you update the PRL.

To check your prl on verizon, type #4357* and hit send

To update your prl on verizon, dial *22899 send..

The latest Verizon prl is 51866

Since a PRL is basically a roaming list, it is inherently different from carrier to carrier. Sprint roams on Verizon, so if Verizon used their PRL they would be telling the phone to roam on their own towers..

I wonder if PRL within a carrier can also vary by region. I assume Dave updated his before posting earlier today. I just updated mine in Cocoa Beach, FL, to 51893.

It's *228, not 228. That could be why you are messing up.

Actually its *22899 to update the roaming directly. *228 gives you a menu and you have to hit 1 to program, 2 to update and 3 for something else. I did not mess up,,, Jeff seems to be right about prls being regionalized by area.

Just upgraded from the Tour 9630 to the Bold 9650 on Sprint. My PRL on the Tour was the same as it is now with the Bold, 60664!

That's not unexpected. The PRL is carrier-dependent, and maybe regional, but it's not device specific in the BlackBerry family of devices.
