Yeah, just be pretty honest and tell them you're about to buy a Tour from someone and would like to know if is clean (not stolen or reported as lost).
FYI Verizon unlike other carriers will not let you activate your bberry without agreeing to a data plan (don't know if this is your first bberry and wanted to give you a heads up). Best.
If you have the Device's PIN number than yea I think is a good idea...
I wanted it in hand during the deal and check it then. Not let them simply send me a number and call only to find the ESN # and phone don't match.
This would be a berry for my wife, I have a Tour and are pleased. Yea I know a Data plan for the phone is forth coming.....

I bought a used Pearl off of someone from Craigslist and did the same thing. Once I had it in hand, I called Verizon to be sure that the phone wasn't stolen. Any respectable seller will allow you to do the same if they have nothing to hide.
One caution - I've read that the warranty does NOT transfer on a resale. So if the unit has any problems, you may not be able to get them fixed easily. Trackball is one potential issue.
You are correct the Manufacturers would be no longer, but my insurance will be active on the berry, I can live with that..
