Can I initiate the OTA update to 5.0 or do I just wait for a notification?
You have to wait for the notification I think, or it will be pushed when you do a reboot when the update is available. I would just stick to upgrading the OS through DM or apploader though.
Yes you will be able to update to 5.0 OTA but I HIGHLY recommend you use DM or apploader like the above comment stated.

Why? What is the difference between doing an OTA upgrade and using DM?
It's probably a lot easier to recover from a failed install using DM than it is with an OTA update.
I think with DM you will have your apps and other stuff backed up. With OTA it may just wipe your phone and install the new OS with default settings. One time I had all my apps gone using ota update.

you can do over the air, just takes a long time to do.
The main difference between the over-the-air updates & desktop manager using the application loader is when you use the desktop manager, a backup file set of your current configuration is created & saved to your hard drive. Just in case something goes wrong, you will have a backup to revert back to if needed. Of course you could always backup your device & then go with the over-the-air update service if you wanted to.
In terms of speed, it really depends on your signal strength. With a strong 3g signal, it should not be a problem. Most of us are using desktop or laptop computers using broadband Internet connections anyway so those speeds for downloads are good but the read/write rate via USB is nothing special.
Over-the-air updates usually do not remove third part applications or modify settings unless there is a compatiblility issue with the new programming or operating system in this case.

I just backed up my device. So I guess I'll wait for a notification around Midnight and let it install when I'm in bed.
when I downloaded the 4.7 it was simple and no complications. I didn't lose anything and did the OTA. I wasn't home and doing it directly on my BB was flawless.
Yes, I last updated OTA with 4.7.161 and had no issues whatsoever. Plus it was quite fast.

I have a question, this will be my first OS update. When you do the update, does it erase everything after its backed up. I noticed I have a lot of used memory, even though I had deleted a bunch a programs I did not like. Didn't really care for Bolt, I like Opera before its official release. I was just curious. I do regular batter pulls and resets.
The system does an online backup before it runs the update. I errored out on my last one on my Curve, it gave me a prompt, and went back and reloaded itself. When you run an update, it may reinstall some of the native apps you deleted previously, say, like Voice Dialing.
Oh, and to give you an idea how well it works? I had accidentally deleted my spell check and custom dictionary between .175 and .186, and after I ran the new update, my custom dictionary was restored.
