Not sure exactly what you're trying to accomplish, but I think Google's Latitude may offer something like what you're looking for?

It basically offers location-based features, including an option to publicly post your current location. Is this what you mean by "checking in?"

Type in google maps on youy phone browser and dl it from there. latitudes will come with it

As Xopher pointed out above, there's a BB app (that you can download and install on your BB) called myKite that interfaces with the Brightkite website. You can find the myKite app at the BB App Store or here on the web.

you can use foursquare for this feature. you create an account, and it keeps track of how many times and where you check in at, it's also use for social networking, so you can get in touch with other people that check in at spots you do as well.

FourSquare seems to be limited in locations/cities. If it's not in your area, what do you do?

BrightKite doesn't seem to be limited that way. For now, I use BrightKite (along with the myKite app).
