What provider are you with? If you are using the 9630 with a GSM provider, you won't be able to get 3G speeds, only EDGE.

From memory 1X is the CDMA network designation for high speed data service, equivalent to the GSM/UMTS network 3G designation. The phone can be programmed to display any desired marker for the same quality of service (and it probably is for the markets which use a non-latin alphabet). It is only an indicator.

The 9630 will run on 3G on Verizon when it is activated.

Fast compared to what? Compared to your Android, probably not.

If your device is currently active on Verizon, changing it to GSM won't do you any good.
1XEV is 3G, if you update to a newer OS, it'll show up as 3G - not 1XEV.

Well i set my phone up yesterday before i turned it off to activate it and I did GMS/UMTS and selected 3G. I activated it today and it is saying searching for UMTS and then goes to no service. I did the activation online

If VZW is your carrier, you need to select 1XEV.

Whether you see a "1XEV" icon or a "3G" icon is purely a matter of aesthetics. 1XEV is 3G on VZW's network. Nothing will differ other than the icon that appears on the screen.

    1XEV IS 3G. It's the SAME thing.

You can't use UMTS or GSM or HSPA on Verizon.

OP, you should update your PRL to see if that helps. Dial *228 and when prompted, press option 2.

You will get 1X on Android too. 1XEV is 3G. The Tour just doesn't say 3G. I am on CDMA (Verizon). 1X is just slower than 1XEV.

Verizon is a CDMA carrier.. no need to use the GSM connection, GSM can be used with GSM carriers (SIM cards) if your Blackberry device is unlocked.
