For starters I would leave it "as is" out of the box to make sure everything is working OK. Check the camera, speaker, video record / playback, email, SMS, all the normal functions. Check the current software version it will probably be .246. If after a couple days it's OK then do your upgrade if you want to.
I'm on .337 and find it to be very good overall on my 9800.

Sounds good. Guess I need to have my apps converted and make sure they are working as well. Download a couple of themes and go from there. Thanks.

Don't need to wipe to insrtall a leak. The loader takes care of all that automagically. Sometimes it's required for some people because some apps just don't like to play nice. But on a brand new phone, a wipe is totally unnecessary.
.450 so far is being very well received, and really brings the browser to life more than any previous version. So if you're even thinking about it, and knowing what I know now after several such installs, I'd slam it in there right out of the box before loading any other apps or doing any personalizing. It would be a good opportunity to get rid of unneeded languages, too, just to save a little space; the loader let's you unselect stuff like that before it starts backing everything up.
Good luck, and welcome to the Torch family!

Just loved that word. Not sure if you meant to misspell it, but it's awesome. Haha.
I left mine "as is" for a bout 2 months or so, then I upgraded to .450. It ran smoothly, no errors. Only bug I had on it was the BBM cursor, when scrolling up a message, would skip like 4 lines. Didn't bother me too much since I use the touch screen to look at previous sent messages. The battery life seemed to suck a bit after I upgraded so I read around a bit and upgraded to .448 about a week or more after .450. (I have a problem with wanting my phone to run amazing :P) I read about Hybrids (Which I would recommend after about a month or 2) and installed one as soon as I could. Couldn't be happier with my phone. I would recommend about the same, unless you don't prefer hybrids although I think you should read about them and see if it's for you.
Leaks don't usually work with DM. Check the 450 thread in the Leaked/Beta OS forum (http://forums.crackberry.com/f95/leaked-os-6-0-0-450-blackberry-torch-9800-fixes-findings-580264/) for all the particulars on installing leaks. User Elite1 has very detailed step-by-step instructions in the 2nd page. In short:
- Download the OS (using one of the DL links you'll find in the above thread)
- install the OS on your PC (gotta be a Windows OS, not a Mac).
All the above steps you can do right now without the phone.
Then:
- Back your phone up using DM.
- Close DM, but don't disconnect the phone.
- Run the Loader that comes with the OS you just installed and let it do its thing. Be patient, because some of the steps can take several minutes.
Sounds scary, especially with a brand new phone, but it's actually pretty painless if you follow the detailed steps. I did my first one about two weeks after getting mine, and I think I was in a total panic until it finally booted up again. Now I can't wait for new leaks to come out.
Got any other questions or concerns, just ask away.

Thanks so much to all. I have done it once but its been so long ago with my pearl. So I am nervous about it. I am going to wait at least a week or so before I upgrade. But I am sure I will have questions, I will read first though. I am also going to check on Hybrids. I was doing some reading but I guess not enough, since I still don't know the difference. But thanks again. I feel so welcome.
