I've just unlocked my old 9860 so I can use it in the States. I was on Bell in Canada. My plan is to buy a prepaid SIM in the US......any suggestion as to th best carrier? Verizon or AT & T?

The best carrier right now is Verizon, no doubt about it overpriced but they're great but they have no SIM as they're CDMA. Although lately I've heard that T-Mobile has been stealing customers from AT&T and Spring like no other 360,000 from sprint and 430,000 from AT&T. I currently have AT&T and i miss T-Mobile never had issues with it and with them being the uncarrier with no contracts it only makes sense to pick them up especially if you have an already unlocked phone.

he has a prepaid phone though I thought you couldn't bring your own SIM GSM phone to a CDMA carrier like Verizon and Sprint..

Tmobile prepaid in the US is probably the best thing going. $70 unlimited for calls, texts and data. Prepaid is the way to go.

The US has two different cell systems: CDMA and GSM.
9860 will not fully work on Verizon, most of Sprint, US Cellular, or MetroPCS, as they use CDMA wireless which means a 9850 truly works on them. You will not get 3G on your phone and do expect dropped calls like crazy, if you manage to get it working at all.
Your 9860 is GSM, which would be AT&T, T-Mobile, and many smaller regional carriers.
