I'm a previous 9700 owner and I just got Torch for few days.
I compared Bold 9700 and Torch 9800 side by side and noticed that 9700 screen's sharper than 9800's.The font looks sharper on 9700.
Do you notice the same thing?
I'm a bit disappointed.:(

They are the same resolution. The screen on the Torch is just bigger.
They are different to my eyes. The small fonts on 9800 are hard to read unlike on 9700.
Do you think I probably got the defective 9800?
I believe that you can change the font size. Could be wrong.
Perhaps the term "resolution" is being used incorrectly. They both have the same number of pixels acrossXdown. However the Resolution, or Pixel Per Inch IS lower on the torch, simply because there is more screen for those same number of pixels to cover.
Resolution:
6 a : the process or capability of making distinguishable the individual parts of an object, closely adjacent optical images, or sources of light b : a measure of the sharpness of an image or of the fineness with which a device (as a video display, printer, or scanner) can produce or record such an image usually expressed as the total number or density of pixels in the image <a resolution of 1200 dots per inch>
it will appear different because you have the same number of lines of resolution over a greater area.
in reality, they are the same resolution, though.
You can.
Options > display > screen display > font size

JasW is essentially saying you're correct. While the screens are the same resolution, the Torch's screen is larger and therefore that resolution is spread over a great area - meaning the resolution is the same but it looks better on the 9700.
I still think the Torch's screen looks great and don't mind the resolution at all - especially if it's saving me as much battery life as I think it is.
Both screens have a resolution of 480 pixels by 360 pixels, but the orientation is different.
When you hold both devices upright, the 9700 is in "Landscape" mode, and the 9800 is in "Portrait Mode".
The resolution of the 9700 when held upright is 480 wide x 360 high.
The resolution of the 9800 when held upright is 360 wide x 480 high.
So, there are fewer pixels of horizontal resolution on the 9800 when held upright, so things will look sharper when they are both held side-by-side in the upright position. Also, the way the layout works on the 9800 may be different based on the orientation... typefaces may increase in size (number of pixels used) when rotated... I don't know as all I have are RUMOURS about a Canadian release date when what I want is the GOSH DARN THING IN MY HAND RIGHT NOW GOSH DARN IT.... (ok... taking deep, calming breaths...)
You can try comparing the screen of the 9800 in LANDSCAPE (sideways) orientation to the 9700 in normal upright orientation, but also be sure to set the font size the same... and you could upgrade the 9700 to a version of OS6 if you want to rule out differences in the way OS5 renders type vs. OS6.
they have the same screen resolution..
let me put it this way..
Which of the 2 vehicles is faster? a School bus running at 45 miles/hr or a bicycle running at 45miles/hr?:D
Unfortunately yes! Although both devices have the same resolution, the difference in screen size makes torch characters less sharper than what they appear on bold! The extra information provided by a larger screen, however, compasates for the lower sharpness.
In general, after working on both devices, I strongly believe that the Bold 9700 is still the best phone for the typical Blackberry user! RIM, in my opinion should stop running behind iphone developments! They should keep and develop their devices within their own personal character and advance on this respect! I do not really understand what's the torch! Iphone? No! Better Blackberry? No! So, I believe that once it is almost impossible to make a better device than Iphone (for what iphone is) today, RIM should make better blackberries (for what blackberries are)! What is a better blackberry? I do not really know! That is the job of the manufacturer. Surprise us as blackberry users! If we wanted an iphone like phone there is only one. The iphone.

This is very similar to a term used in commercial digital printing - "apparent DPI" So although both devices have the same resolution screens, the resolution on the 9700 appears to be better.
Is the screen any similar to the Curve 8520? My Bold is getting fixed and I'm using my friends Curve and I can't stand the resolution of it's screen. Are fonts crisp like the Bold or is it comparable to the Curve?
The Curve is 320x240, so it's a lower resolution. Not sure what the screen size is, though, as that affects how good the resolution looks. I think the Torch fonts are pretty crisp.
The 9700 has a higher resolution. That is why you can watch HD videos and the 9800 torch does not have HD capability yet.

wow.. you have no clue what you are talking about.
LMAO not a chance buddy not a chance:p
But id say the crispness of the 9800 is nothing compared to the 9700...my 9700 looks far more crisp but as people have said its due to the screen size.
Its taken me a few days to get used to it but i definitely miss the sharpness of my 9700 screen to the 9800 screen but really nothing comes close to the iphone4 retina display on my iphone4....just wish RIM would stop using such old tech in their screens and get with the frigging program ie start making devices with super sharp screens for gods sake:p
Resolution looks absolutely fine to me on default settings, and I came from 9700 and 8900 (same resolution).

It's the same with the 9700. The screen is just bigger so everything looks crisper on the Bold.

Now I'm worried. how could it be that the fonts would be different between devices. Mine don't look good and I've wiped and reinstalled the OS and still not different. Could the fonts look wierd due to a hardware issue?
Could be an issue of where the screens were manufactured. I learned this after going through severl storm 1's. The first one I had was from Hungary and had a blue tint. After getting a referb phone from Mexico my screen looked different to me. I noticed the tint was warm colors and it took a bit to get used too. So yes it could be a hradware issue but not a defect. Just depends on where the device was made.
I didn't know that. I think I'm going to exchange mine although I think most ppl agree the text isn't stellar on this device
Text is mighty sharp and very easily readable on mine, no complaints at all.
