I remember that when I first joined the forum it was as a way to learn how to deal with the battery issues I'd been experiencing with my iPhone....I have *no clue* what my thought process was that led me here. I remember that there were people in the iPhone group who were very helpful (Duvi and Navi, if I remember correctly) and the forum was, to me, a lifesaver because there were a lot of tips that I used to see if I could learn to deal with the battery. Only after finally realising that the iPhone was not for me did I venture to the Blackberry forums.
Just as I'd used the forums to get insight on how to deal with a device that was not working out for me, there are people who are trying to learn about the Blackberry they've just purchased. When I was new to the iPhone forum I listened to everyone, but then learned that there were specific people to tune out. What would be sad is if someone comes here to look for information and is blasted by posts full of misinformation and nonsensical garbage. To say nothing of those of us who just want to chat up people we respect or enjoy.
I learn a great deal from the forum. But I won't lie and say that certain trolls don't detract greatly from the enjoyment of it. And I'd also hate for a new person to be misguided.
Not a fan of the torch or os6. Rim is good at being secure, but that is also something i don't need. Android is doing it for me now, and very well. I'd say 90% of android success comes from them being open source and that's why rim will never be on that level, there game is security and they are #1 at that. Just depends on what you want and need.

Just an fyi, BusinessInsider is not a real news site, it's an opinion piece. So it should be taken as such. Also Yarrow, the author hates RIM, I don't think anything he writes about the RIM can be taken as a legitimate piece of journalism, not that anything he writes is even decent. He is actually a terrible, terrible, tech critic, but it's the kind of sensationalism the site thrives upon.
The Torch is a solid phone, if you like it great, if you don't good on you as well. I think RIM will be fine.
Exactly. Not one flavour applies to all. Open source is not a big plus as far as I'm concerned, but I have no right to say that it's not important because obviously a lot of people feel stronly for it.
Your decision work well for you, mine work for me. Why should either of us ridicule each other's choice?!?

"crappy BlackBerry"
I don't care how 'acceptable' it has become, using excrement as an adjective in any sort of publication instantly makes it a joke.
However there is a plus side to "crappy". Since the inventor of the flush toilet was John Crapper, using the term "crappy" could mean that whatever is being referred to shows ingenuity and inventiveness like John Crapper did. :D
Holy crapper!!! That was one h3ll of a spin!!!!

I read their site (mostly tech related articles) and I kind of agree.
Yea rim will be fine, they are to good at what they are good at(business) for anyone to take that away.

Wrong. Despite popular belief Crapper only served to make the flushing
toilet (water closet) popular. It was actually invented by John Harrington.
Also of note Crappers' first name was Thomas not John.
No matter where the original toilet bowl came from, it is the Japanese that perfected it! Mmm... Heated seats...

Toilet humor hijacking...should be right up 67T and ML's alley. Definitely age appropriate for them.
I love ******** website like this because of the things they would say to get your attention. I'm curious do these guys even own a Torch?
Roflmao....
This thread went from a discussion on a tech blog, to the trolls taking over, to a discussion on who invented the toilet and whether excrement used as an adjective is funny.
I always find these forums humorous and informative. The main reason I decided to hang around. Keep it up.
ML owned a Torch for a week and 67T probably has not even touched one.
Thanks, though I think I sounded like a politician. Hmmm, maybe a job for the future?;)
Quite frankly, this thread wasn't even worth a reply until it was upgraded to "toilet humour" status.

Well, back to the flop issue. I have a Blackberry (9800), an iPhone 4, and an Android device. I am sick and tired of these tech blogs comparing the 9800 to the other 2.. They're apples and oranges. The BlackberrIES (meaning the whole range), is predominantly designed for different uses than the others - face it - if iPhone and Android never came along, RIM would never have uped the ante on their devices for multimedia and apps.
So, that all said, the Torch is a very worthy successor to the 9000 and 9700. It CERTAINLY corrected the problems of the Storm series. And the next incarnation will be that much of a better BLACKBERRY.
I can't even compare messaging on the other devices vs Blackberry. I wish the tech bloggers wouldn't.
And PS - don't get me wrong - I love the iPhone - but, what I use it for (multimedia, entertainment, surfing, when needed, fun stuff, etc.) is significantly different than the Torch.
I've had almost every cutting edge phone since the Motorola Brick. I've yet to have one device that does it all, in 25 years.....
it should have made the top five. :D
I just looked at his list. With some exceptions, he admits where technical quality is there in some. It's just marketshare/revenue gain that he's basing his use of "flop" on. He outright admits the Nexus is a good phone, but their marketing dept. screwed up in how they handled it. On the other hand, when he makes the KIN phones #1, he commends Microsoft for pulling them off the market, never to return. But both models really are back, lower prices & fewer features. Some of his flops really are. I don't have as much time to devote to following techie stuff, but if they all were supposed to be really well known, I missed some. :p
I wanted to put the Torch in it's own section of comments because I own one & have more comments. From the author's viewpoint, the lack of sales makes it a flop. AT&T started out selling at $199.99 with two year contract, dropped to $149.99, & four months after release it's $99.99. For any nontechie buyer (which is most buyers), that raises huge red flags, which will not help sales.
The Torch is my first BB, but not my first feature/smart phone. And I did a lot of reading about all my options before going to the store, trying several & buying the Torch. The original release of the Torch with build .141 of OS6 definitely didn't live up to the reviews. My particular hardware had none of the issues mentioned loudly & often over various forums. So much for RIM's hardware QC.
This is the first time I've ever had to pay for a beta OS. Usually I get my copies free. OS6 build .141 was "not ready for primetime". Way too many issues. Subsequent builds have improved the experience, but it's still not all there. Interestingly, each build has different issues for different users. And the usual response (including, sometimes, mine) is something like, "each phone is different, each user has different apps". But since when do apps control the OS instead of the OS controlling the apps? Or, unlike other platforms, is BB different? I'd probably give BB another shot, but probably only my 30 day "buyer's remorse" period, next time.
RIM originally positioned the Torch as a possible iPhone killer. With the lack of hardware & software QC, I suspect they threw that thought out the window in order to make enough sales for the quarter to keep investors happy. I'd bet that same decision has hurt overall sales, because that kind of negative press gets out. And the Torch has lost the kind of word of mouth referals that benefit sales for a lot of smartphones. Having said that, the potential is there. A Torch II with proper QC on both hardware & OS could do well. I'm hoping they learned from this one.
So, now, we have to start saying, "Holy Harrington!"? :p
great and truthful post. You atleast admit to the flaws that some i think ignore. It is a better device now than at release i am sure. But it started just like the storm series. **** RIM is going downhill with those updates!
True post. True post.
The torch did have a lot of os issues in the beginning. I bought it day one and went through 3 torches. Then I went to the ip4. Now I'm baack again and the difference is night and day. OS is very polished now. No issues at all. I'm loving it.
I think that they should have done better hardware wise, but hopefully they learned and make it right.

I love my torch! I'm not sure what other phones offer because, I don't use anything but blackberry, and I stick to what works. Thus far it has exceeded all of my expectations!
Flop? Pfft?
