I am officially TORCHED!! Lovin every minute of it!! Can't ask for anything more!
Can anybody confirm if the GPS is locked or unlocked (works with Google maps)? Thanks.
GPS is unlocked. Works great.
When I purchased mine yesterday, two guys bought the phone outright. The manager said the policy was that they had to be TELUS customers, but they didn't have to sign a new contract or anything. This was at the corporate store at Carrefour Laval.
Picked up a Torch yesterday as well from Telus (Southgate Mall, Edmonton). Unlocked it for $5 on freethisberry.com...I'm using it on Telus, so the unlocking was a more "for funsies" thing, but coming from CDMA, I had never played around with SIM cards...
It seems the only one that is spreading the 'internet misinformation' in this thread is you rje. Why dont YOU give US all a break....Christ!
this might be a little off topic, but i'm planning to get a Torch with Telus. Right now I have a Pay as you go plan with Rogers, but am planning to switch to Telus as I can get a better plan with them. I just want to know how the reception is for Telus. I hear Rogers has the best reception out of the big 3 and am hoping that Telus is just as good. I'm in Toronto.
also, how is the telus coverage in the States? I know it becomes AT&T with Rogers in the States but how about Telus? Thanks for the help!
Telus is a good company to deal with. Better than Rogers. However, I think the Telus 3G network where I live in Toronto is mediocre. I can't use my phone in an elevator, a garage or anyplace with a particular kind of roof. With Rogers, I could use my phone just about anywhere. In the States my Telus phone flipped over to AT&T.
well that doesn't sound very promising. my number one concern for the phone is reception. i had Bell a long time ago and their reception was just utter crap. do not want to experience that again! If I'm in a basement for example, I would hope I could get reception...
I have more stupid questions but bare with me since this will be my first contract. I know that once you buy a phone, you can test it out for like 30 days or whatever and return it back/exchange if you don't like it. But lets say I sign the contract with Telus for 3 years, 5 days into it I decide that I would rather go with Rogers. Is there a grace period for me to test out the carriers and what not? Or once I sign it, it's a done deal, i'm locked with Telus for 3 years?
Last question! One of the main reasons why I would rather go with Telus right now is that I get unlimited data with them. With Rogers I get 500MB. So if I were to stream youtube a lot, browse the internet, use the GPS, etc I'm assuming that would go over 500MB? If I stuck with Telus than I wouldn't have to worry about going over ever. Decisions, decisions!
Thanks for the help guys! :)
Bell & Telus share the same HSDPA network. They give you 14 days on a phone and 48 hours on a new contract. Telus doesn't offer unlimited data.I have 6 GB.
Telus DID offer unlimited data. On my Storm 9530, I was on an unlimited data plan..however once I upgraded to the Torch, because Telus no longer offered that plan, I had to switch to a 2Gig plan. I asked Telus why this was and they said it had something to do with all the old plans being phased out due to new 3G+ being phased in. On a side note he told me i never exceeded 500Mb of data on my unlimited plan..i did lots of internet browsing, media watching, but never any heavy downloading.
well i would be getting a "corporate individual voice and unlimited data plan" so i guess there isn't one out to the public. 48 hours is good enough. That will give me enough time to see if I want to switch back to Rogers. lol.
I love the new 3g network. Its the only one that actually works at my house

My old Curve plan was great, unlimited everything
I got my Torch yesterday, I got the 1g data with a 5g free bonus (good enough)
going from a Curve that I had for 3 years is like day and night compared to the Torch
but I must say, the Curve didn't give me any problems over the 3 years, very happy about that
Interestingly, I had the old Student 50 Plan with Telus (and its Unlimited Data). I still had 1.5 years left on my old 8330, so I bought the Torch off contract ($630...I worked some overtime this summer haha). My plan transferred from my CDMA Curve to the HSPA Torch without any problems. So, in effect, I have Unlimited Data on my Torch. Not as big of a deal now, thanks to WiFi, but a pretty rare thing now with all providers clamping down on data usage.
I re-signed for 3 years...not really wiling to spend full buy out price on a Torch, but yes, with wi-fi and 6g of data, I should be ok as well
Reception should be identical between TELUS and Bell with the Torch because they share the same HSPA network. In my opinion, TELUS and Bell have always had better coverage than Rogers, at least here in Quebec. People here used to refer to Rogers as the swiss cheese network, because coverage was extensive but full of holes. Of course, when you're talking about coverage in your basement or the elevator at work, it's basically luck of the draw as to who will happen to have a site nearby and offer the best coverage.
In the USA, you'd be roaming on AT&T (Telus CDMA phones roam on Verizon).
They're slowly eliminiating those grandfathered CDMA unlimited plans, people that has it are bummed.
Ya..i think the "reasoning" they gave me was just blowing smoke. I can understand them wanting to phase those plans out nowadays with tethering and the abilities to turn your phone into "hotspots" or whatever, but yea..it does suck not being unlimited now
Does anyone know if you can select a column view on the web browser ?
I haven't seen a option for that, not sure if there is either.......
also, I tried downloading "Operamini but I get a error message, has anyone tried "Operamini on their Torch......
I believe column view as an option was taken out because all's you have to do now is double tap on the screen and it zooms and re-wraps the text (which worked the same in the Storm series)
So just thought I would share my experience with the Telus HSPA network. I live, work and golf in the Markham, Vaughan, Scarborough and Stouffville areas. I've had the Torch since Thursday, and I have to say this network is amazing! On the CDMA network with my old Storm (RIP) I would get no reception at all on the golf course, now 5 bars!! I can't believe it. Gives me more of an excuse to skip work and play golf :). At home when in the parking garage and elevators I would drop calls, now it's crystal clear and 5 bars. I can't tell you enough about how pleased I am with this network. Not to mention the ability to send and receive data while on a call! Anyways, just thought I would throw that out there, I hope everyone else is as pleased with the device and network as I am.
