It means you are in a 2g area or connected to a 2g tower in the area.
edge = 2g without data services like BIS but you can still browse.
EDGE = 2g with all data enabled (BIS)
3g = same as EDGE but faster speeds.

go in to your 'manage connections' and then mobile network options and then make the network selection to 3G only and see if that happens
and aunt jemima, 3g is no BIS data... 3G is Data Enabled!
Honestly I've never seen a small g! So I didn't know there was a 3g and a 3G! Now I know, thanks!

Last time I checked, just so the original poster is aware, the "3G ONLY" option is unavailable on AT&T Torches for some reason. Therefore, if you're in the US, you might be out of luck in that regard.
Actually, there is a very good reason. AT&T's 3G coverage is not great - certainly not as much as it's 2g EDGE coverage (which is almost everywhere). Go a few miles from a major city or off a major highway or interstate and you lose that 3G, fast. If we had the option to have 3G only, and it was enabled, and we went out to the country, our phones would basically be dead weight with no service. AT&T knows this and that's why they set it up so we would never lose at least basic phone service. At least not until you go way out where there is no service from anyone.
It's not like some other countries where some carriers (like some in Canada) only run 3G radio frequencies.
It's also possible that the 3G towers around the OP's area is having issues and the phone is dropping back to EDGE to maintain service. Happens in the downtown area of my town all the time during the busiest part of the day. I assume it's a big load, because it settles down to a good 3G signal in the morning and evening.
Thanks for the responses. I guess its probably what joeldf said, they are having issues, because I'm pretty sure it never happened before. I'm on AT&T.

you are on the edge of getting 3g ! sorry it's friday
Like joeldf said, AT&T are having issues in your area, Occasionally (larger) cell masts (towers) will do this switching on devices to keep within a certain QoS (Quality of Service) range selected for the area, during periods of high usage, which if not done, would result in your speed being so slow that you may loose connectivity when trying to load web pages, etc.
A general rule of thumb being, if you see this happening in the area for more than 72 hours, call AT&T and ask to open a Network Troubleshoot ticket for the Network Management team. If the issue is widespread and has been reported, a rep will be able to see this as a current region issue on a map they have available to them, and if not, they'll be able to open a ticket and have it looked into.
This is not exactly correct. All the time have 3G (not 3g) and I am not on BIS. No SB nothing tweaked to get it. When network goes to 2G, my SP do not supports edge, then it shows gprs (no GPRS)
Btw, edge is a layer on 2G (GPRS), and "labeled" as 2.5G - not talking about devices settings but technology
