Hello CB. My name is mike. And I am a new 9800 Torch owner . I'm smiling from ear to ear. I wouldve never thought that I would part ways with my 9700 but I have and I love it!

I do have a question. On the screen brightness, I am trying to set it to 70 percent to help conserve battery, but it doesn't matter if its on 100 or 10, it doesn't change. What am I missing?

while I was playing with my brightness, sometimes it doesnt look like there is much change... I actually ended up setting mine to 40%. Everything still looks nice and sharp and clear... for me anyway.... it's a little easier on the eyes, especially when the rest of the room is darker and I havent had any problems seeing the screen when it's been bright out.

i have mine set to 20% and it's still bright as daylight.
it's one way of conserving battery.

I just played around with mine again just to see the difference and I dont think I would like it up above 70... 10 was a little dark for me, I think 30-40 is just right....

I set mind to 10 so I guess that might be the reason why I seem to have good battery life.

Ya the battery on the 9700 is the only advantage over the 9800, but this screen is awesome. Thanks for the replies

You cannot set the screen brightness on the BB Torch like you can on the iPhone to extend battery life. Maybe there should be an additional application for screen brightness. RIM? Are you listening?

0 is sufficient for me. Once you get used to it, anything more seems profligate for battery life.

Mine is the same.. 0-100 has a barely noticeable difference.. I think there's a bug.. I've had this issue from the day I first got it the week it came out all the way until my 337 upgrade on the weekend

I have mine set on 0. I still find it too bright at times. Especially when it's dark. So I had to turn on the automatically dim backlight function. However from what I've heard that uses up battery since it's always sensing how well the environment is lit.

Anyways, the screen is too bright for me at night if I don't use that function.

This was not the case for os 5 on the 9700 for example. The brightness would change as you selected the various levels. Not sure if they changed this purposely, or if this is a bug.

My 100-0 is honestly barely noticeable even after hitting save.. it dims the slightest bit..

The difference between 100 and 0 on mine is very noticeable. Even 100 to 70 is quite noticeable. I keep mine at 0 since it's still plenty bright and really does save battery.

If you enable the auto backlighting, it's still going to change the brightness based on conditions. If you want consistent brightness, disable the auto backlighting.

Mine is set to 0 but it is still not as low as I want it to be.
I believe RIM should adjust these setting so the change would be more dramatic. I was looking at my daughter’s iTouch and I thought her screen is broken. Later she explained that it was set to that low (I could barely see it) - but she said it is perfect in complete darkness (like at night in bed) - RIM please think about this! Thx!!!

Mine is at 100, haha. Haven't bothered to mess with settings, but I'll give it a try. I don't have any problems with battery life with it at 100.

leave my screen on 100% and my battery lasts an entire day.
Simply throw it in the charging pod when I get home and all is fine.

If I have to do all these things to just save the battery and not be able to use it how I want, whats the point in buying the device? It's the nature of the beast, it's a battery, they all tend to die in time. Simple solution, Carry a charger of some sort. I don't understand how this is even an issue with any battery operated device, been doing the same thing since rechargeable batteries came about.

It's like going to the flying field and not carrying my charger then complaining because my airplane batteries only lasted one flight and I cant fly again because I didn't carry my charger.
