RIMM shot themselfs in the foot, think about this, more tmobile customers would have upgraded and got this phone, rather then att. ATT already has the iphone, tmobile could have used a device like this to get all those customers to upgrade from there 8520s or even the 9700.

This phone was orginally commissioned by AT&T a couple years ago. Not defending RIM or AT&T but just explaining how this product came to be.

Why do you care how people spend their money? The people here aren't idiots. They bought a product that fits their needs.
I'll tell you what it is -- it's:

"I want a smartphone so I can check my email, Facebook and Twitter! Cool it has all those apps, should be fun? Why do people hate BB? I don't care about how it looks"

And then you play with it and after a little while you start to notice that BB does EVERYTHING slower, laggier, and your phone is EOLed in a short period. It doesn't hit you quick. The smartphone experience is fun at first. Over time though, you'll get a clock in an important spot...a message you can't read...a battery pull when you're busy...and then you realize other phone owners don't have to put up with this.

This is why 50% of BB users want out. It's lack of awareness.

Walmart had it for 99 dollars from the first day too---when will these cell phone companies realize that people are tired of getting screwed for their phones and locked into 2 yr deals to get any sort of a decent price, plus they keep changing their fee structure to keep the money rolling in...AT&T has slowly changed basically all of their fees on new contracts from what they were 6 months ago, and they wonder why people aren't just RUNNING out to change to AT&T for their exclusive phones? Why is that a mystery to them? Their business model stinks on ice.

I don't think this was RIM's doing, however RIM launching with one carrier was ********.

we bought 4 Torches in our house..
it was only me who did the upgrade and got the 149 price ( premier account less 50)
my dad and 2 brothers decided to purchase the phone outright.. retail price
since they are afraid/ don't want to sign for the ETF of $325.

As noted, the Torch was going for $99.99 out the gate with Wirefly.com, LetsTalk.com (Walmart), and Amazon.com. Since they were already at $99.99 and now Rimm states they are cutting the price by 50%, I bet those three sites will be dropping the price down to $49.99 within a week, heck maybe even before this weekend.

Yea, but for 99 dollars? I can go pick it up at an ATT store in two days, but at the 199 upgrade price.

Well, considering the hardware that went into the device $99 is about right. Cameras are cheap, and the screen and processor...well you've heard it before.
Not bashing at all, because the thing works. But RIM can afford to sell it at that price IMO because there is nothing groundbreaking in it. Just older parts put together in a really cool way. The fact that it gives people a new experience, a new form factor, a choice of input methods, and something never seen before on ATT makes it a bargain.

how did you get that done? i've called twice now and all they tell me is they don't price match. i have to return it within 30 days, or waste a trip into the store to tell me the same thing. how ******** it that. i wonder how much the "restocking" fee is i'm sure they'll charge me. do they charge it even if it has a tinny echo??

the re-stocking fee is $35, but if you can get a cool csr you can get that waived...it doesn't make sense to have it re-stocked if you r buying it again...
