    Hi, new BB user here.

I am trying to determine how I can manage the wireless function of my 9800.

The few users I've talked with have told me that the device prefers wireless over the mobile cell network for data.

My primary wireless hot spots are Home and McDonalds right now.

I checked my mobile network usage this morning at AT&T and I'm up to 5MB and both were downloads shown on a 'wap.cingular' . Both downloads occurred, intentionally, while the device was in one of the wireless hot spots shown above and the little wi-fi indicator was active.

The McD's network is free and it seemed to hook right up to it. My home network is secure and I opened up the wireless router and manually set the device to the router.

    Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The BB logo (four dots) should appear to the right of the wifi signal indicator when BIS data is connected through wifi. When you connect to a wifi hotspot the BIS should switch from the mobile network to wifi automatically, only reason I would think it won't is if the device determines that the mobile network is receiving a better signal. Also don't think there's any way to force it to go to wifi unless you turn the mobile network completely off (and risk missing phone calls).

I have noticed this also. When at work I can connect to a wifi hotspot but the signal is really weak. So in order for me to do things I need to do the torch uses my mobile network instead of the wifi even though I am connected to wifi. Cant say where the BIS icon is since I use a different theme and there's a bug in the TB related to the icon.

A similar thing happened with my first Torch. The data usage kept going up although I was on WiFi. I know some things have to route through the cell towers, but I explained it to AT&T and I got a new phone for free. Problem solved.

Make sure you are on WiFi, use the *3282# CALL feature to monitor your data usage, and if the problem persists, tell AT&T to replace the phone.
