OK, put berry slider on the phone and instant agro. After a few days I figured it out. If you turn off all the ways it can come on automatically it's a lot better. Still does some wonky stuff with its battery indicator and weather display, but what does one expect for $3? It definitely does an easy and effective job of locking the screen and convenience key.
